420C Sediment bowl
420C Sediment bowl
I just removed the sediment bowl off of my dozer, and there wasn't a screen. The only gasket that I can see
is what looks like a square ring that sets up in a groove. The replacement screens and gasket sets that seem
to be available, have a cork type gasket that seems to be about 1/4" wide. I don't see any square ring type anywhere.
Is that ring supposed to be there, as it doesn't show it in that parts diagram?
I'm afraid if I remove it, the bowl will try to push the cork gasket up in that groove, and this may distort it and cause
a leak.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, Pete

Re: 420C Sediment bowl
My 40c has the screen and square type ring that you described. It shows in my parts catalog as L886T gasket. Might be available from Lavoy or local JD dealer.

Re: 420C Sediment bowl
Thanks
Is it like a rubber o-ring with a square cross section? All I saw in your catalog was the screen and the cork type washer
about 2" OD and 1.5" ID.
It's possible mine is from a different model. Mine is a 1957 420C.

The L886T gasket that's in the parts diagram is cork, and about 2" OD and 1.5" ID.fundytides wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 12:29 pmMy 40c has the screen and square type ring that you described. It shows in my parts catalog as L886T gasket. Might be available from Lavoy or local JD dealer.
Can't see any square ring listed.

Re: 420C Sediment bowl
Hi,
The rubber ring and cork gaskets come and go, back and forth, at the JD parts counter over the years. It is always a crap shoot as to what you are gonna get each time you need one.....
And, it is also a crap shoot if you need one or not every time the bowl is removed. I learned to keep spares on hand.

Thanks everyone, Pete
Re: 420C Sediment bowl
While you are in there, remove the inlet fitting from the carb and you will find a strainer. It may need to be cleaned if the bowl screen was missing.
Re: 420C Sediment bowl
Update:
Thanks to everyone for their comments to my post. It seems when I was looking up into the sediment bowl
housing with a flashlight, I was seeing the clean area on the rubber gasket where the bowl seated, which looked narrower because
the rest of it was dingy from nasty fuel in the bowl. I put in a new screen and cork gasket, replaced the fuel
line to the carb, which had been cut and an inline filter put in. I also removed and checked the screen on the
inlet to the carb. It seemed like I had to tighten the filter nut pretty tight to keep it from leaking, but I finally
got it to stop.
