1957 420C seized - photo journey
Re: 1957 420C seized - photo journey
The crank shaft is out and measured.
There are four bearing journals.
The two outer are the main bearing journals that support the crank.
The two inner are the rod bearing journals. One of these inner bearings is what deformed owing to lack of oil.
The crank has been machined before. The bearing journals are 0.040 inch undersized, and the mains are 0.010 undersized.

Head with valves removed.
The outers are exhaust valves, the inners are intake valves.

Resurfacing the valves.
Intake valves are 30 degrees, exhaust at 45 degrees.

#2's intake valve rod is too bent.
The resurfacing still leaves an unpolished mating surface.
Need to replace this valve.

The bad news is that Lavoy informs me that the bearings for this turned-down crank are not available anymore.
Thinking about this.
Is it terminal?
Will I have to bury a 3 ton crawler because I can't find a 6 ounce part?
Stay tuned.

Don't know much about this but can the bad journal(s) be spray welded and remachined? Just a thought.
have 40c 4 roller crawler, 1927 Ford T Touring car, 1931 Ford A Roadster, 1951 Standard Vanguard Saloon. Never a dull moment!
Re: 1957 420C seized - photo journey
The crank itself is undamaged.
I can re-use (don't wanna) the main bearings, but not the rod bearings.
The replacement rod bearings need to be for an 0.040 inch undersized journal on the already-machined-once crank.
I'm still looking for them. Got some possibilities in the works.
One expensive option is to buy a new crank with the standard journal diameters but only if the standard size bearings can be acquired.
Another interesting option is to have the bearings made from scratch.
I have an offer from a machinist buddy to make the bearings from McMaster 932 bearing brass tubing.
He's good at his craft, and can reverse engineer from the bad ones I have in hand.

Here's the McMaster Link for the curious.

Is this crazy or brilliant?
Any of youz guyz ever done this before?

Looking good . Thanks for continued posting of such good pictures.
Re: 1957 420C seized - photo journey
Update.
Lavoy had everything except the main crank bearings.
He actually found the 0.040 undersized rod bearings.
But the main crank bearings were undamaged, so I'm gonna just stick them back in.
Then next two weeks, I'll be scrubbing parts, etc.
I expect I'll have everything by mid-September and will keep the adventure going in the wonderful world of color.

I got every part I needed from Lavoy.
Fast turnaround too. Thanks Lavoy.
New pistons and new rings. We mounted the piston to connecting rod, then clamped the rod in a vice to hold the piston steady.
The pics below describe placing rings on a piston.
Sorry for the background clutter on some of the images.

We reseated 3 resurfaced valves in the head.
The 4th valve, an intake valve, is new.

This is the objective of the whole exercise!
The new connecting-rod to crankshaft bearings being installed.
They snap right in. Here is the cap half.
Gotta keep it clean, no contamination allowed between the bearing and the cap surface.
This is a rare beast indeed, the crankshaft journal was turned down 0.040" on a previous rebuild. So Lavoy had to find bearings that were sized to compensate for the skinnier crank. Which he did.

Re: 1957 420C seized - photo journey
A critical step is to set the internal timing of the engine.
The crankshaft gear is aligned with the camshaft gear by mating the gears so the marks align.
Then after the pistons are installed and everything torqued correctly, the oil pump is reinstalled so its distributor shaft is properly aligned to the camshaft drive gear.
I highly recommend purchasing a special tool, (Deere PN AM450T) that allows you to set the oil pump orientation as it is installed.
Below see the tool keyed into the end of the distributor shaft.
Cylinder 1 is TDC of the compression stroke (Compression Stroke: Flywheel not yet installed, so we eyeballed the camshaft orientation for Cyl 1 to show both valve cams have the valves closed.)

The oil-pan is on with it's new gasket.
The next fun step is to line up the engine and flywheel to attach the flywheel.
The orientation pin has to line up with a blind hole on the flywheel.
For me, the trick was to set the flywheel, with the hole at 12:00 on a jack-ramp.
Need a light touch on the engine hoist to mate everything, but it can be done.

This is a pic of handy tools layed out on a truck hatch door.
Left to right: 420 guage, clutch disk centering tool (lopped of a scrapped drive shaft), bell housing mount bolts, with heads cut off, to align the engine as it is guided onto the bell housing.
