Starter, battery, carb, governor, re-installed.
We wanted to start it up before we glued more components on, such as the radiator, etc.
Then the distributor should be easy right?... Nope. This is where I learned the previous overhaul was done WRONG! The internal timing was previously 180' out. I guess the guys who rebuilt her before didn't have the distributor timing tool. The distributor was mounted with the coil wire connector next to the engine block.. but it should be totally outboard of the engine. I looked at my initial pics and re-installed the distributor to match this wrong orientation. Needless to say, the engine would not start... but I figured it out when I found the ONE pic in the John Deere manual showing the distributor with the coil-wire connector outboard. Next day, turned the distributor, and it STARTED RIGHT UP! This is a happy moment and the proper 4-letter words were joyously emitted.
Here she is, ready to start (when i snapped the pic, the distributor is 180' out of alignment)
