New Shirt

Post by jimmydiesel » Thu Nov 03, 2022 5:27 pm

I have a good friend that has some vinyl cutting equipment. We made up a new 440 shirt today.
This is on the back.

Thanks B Town
I was very pleased with how it turned out. We did the art work a few months ago and finally found a shirt and some time to get it done.

I am not an expert on copyright issues. My understand is that if I made it for personal use and not for sale that there is not a copyright problem. I do not have a T shirt business but have made a few dozen shirts for personal use, mostly Studebaker. I plan to make decals for my 440’s also - of course for personal use. I see that some of the suppliers that sell John Deere decals say they are licensed by John Deere.
Some don’t I haven’t found any 440 decals for sale that looked like they matched what I thought they should look like.
If any of the members of the board know how the copyright regulations work I would be interested in learning about them.
Thanks
Steve

There is a lot of info readily available on the web about both copyrights and trademarks, too much to post here. Trademark rights may be the bigger issue here using logos. The Deere logos used over the years would be trademarks and legally protected. They have even won trademark/copyright lawsuits around the green and yellow color scheme. Another example is Disney. People have been in trouble (taken to court for violations) over the years for using Disney characters on items like shirts and hats without license, those images are copyrighted and in some cases trademarks.

It would be similar to patten rights. When taking a media class in college I was taught that college students a re immune to such laws and can copy all they want for educational purposes such as class projects. I was also told that companys can legally copy a pattented item up to 3 times for with in company use but not for sale. I'd be very surprised if there was any liability for incorporating the logo into any product as long as it was for personal use and not for resale. But then, I've never read the laws or sat for a bar exam. Monsanto will get your hide nailed to the wall if a neighbor looses geneticly modified organisms on your property while hauling a crop down the road. The system can be difficult.

Hi,

We have a shirt printing business. What happens is you get to sell some for a while. Once the copyright owner notices you, you get a very nice Cease and Desist letter. And then you very nicely comply and that is that. If you don't, well then you make the lawyer who sent the letter very happy.

The vinyl looks great, but doesn't stand up well long term. If you are going into production, you will be better off using plastisol ink and a traditional screenprinting process. Pretty easy with a one color. Can use the cut vinyl on the screen and cure the ink in an oven. You only need one squeegee too.

There used to be a guy named T Shirt Bob on eBay sold very simple screenprinting stuff. His math was something to behold. Using it, we should be richer than Bill Gates!

Stan
Thanks for the information / advise. I am not planning to go into business, just having fun in retirement. A few shirts a few decals, push some dirt and listen to the little jimmy scream.
Studebakers are my other bad habit. They used 3-53 and 4-53 GM/ Detroit Diesel engines also.
