I recently bought a crawler with an engine knock. Problem turned out to be spun rod bearing in the front cylinder. I'm pretty sure the problem originated from an over heating issue. Head gasket appears to be blown and had water in the oil. The engine still has the stock bore of 4.25, cylinder walls are in good shape with a small ridge, but you can tell the front cylinder has a tad more wear, I'm planning on boring 40 over, but am open to suggestions
Questions are as follows. Where is a good resource for an engine rebuild kit? Bearings, pistons, gaskets etc.
I may need to replace the connecting rod too(mine is scored) if anyone has one.
Would it be worth it to do any performance mods while I have the engine apart? Bigger bore like +.125? Bigger valves? Mill and flow the head?
I don't want to make it an unreliable bastard by adding more power, but the motor seems pretty stout and I wouldn't think it would mind having some more compression and better breathing.
All in all, I'm fine with just returning it to us former factory specs and having a good reliable machine, but I've built hot rods my whole life, so I had to ask! I'll post pics when I have some more and I'm not on my phone.

.040 is an obsolete overbore. You need to have the blocked measured to determine what you need, I have had several that I had to go .090 to get a round hole.
There are no undersized rod bearings right now and for the near future. Other than them, I stock or have available all of the other internal and cylinder head parts.
Depending on serial number, yours already is higher compression. Only compression gains are in the head, nothing can be done with pistons, they are already flush with the top of the block.
If it's been overheated, head is likely cracked, get it magnafluxed.

And unless it already has them put in stellite valve seats for unleaded gas.

Link to picture album. I'll update the album later when the block is out and on the stand.
I'll be sure to have the head checked.
