Bought a 440 now the fun begins

Post by The Fireman » Tue Aug 14, 2007 11:27 am

Hello all, I've been looking around this site for a few days and have decided to join now that I bought a 440.

I picked it up at a yard sale for $1000, tracks are good and the engine ran however it was leaking anti-freeze into the base. I've got it apart and have the bearings and gaskets coming to put her back together. Looks to me like the head gasket was re-used when the engine was rebuilt last, makes no sense to me but I'll fix her and get to work.

I was able to find the internal parts but the rubber radiator mounts are a diferent story. They are badly dry rotted and allowed the radiator to drop down and rub on the pump shaft. I've fixed the pin hole but now I need to find some mounts to put the radiator back in. Dose anyone know where I could find a set or has anyone tried making a set out of somthing else?

Thanks for the help and I'm sure I'll have a few questions about this machine as I get into it a little deaper, its a little older than anything we worked on when I worked for deeere, so I may need a little guidance from time to time on what works and what dosnt on these old crawlers.

Don't know if they use the same mounts as the 1010, but I posted this earlier.

I'm not sure if they are the same or not, mine are about 1" diameter rubber disk in a metal frame that's riveted to the radiator bracket. There's a metal spacer in the center for a 1/4 20 bolt to pass through and into the frame to mount the radiator.

I may have found some at yesterdays tractors but I figured I'd wait to see what evreyone here has to say before I jump on those for 10 bucks a peice. I'll have to check on McMasters tonight at work thanks for the tip.

Lavoy,
Thanks for the help with the mounts, if I'm luckey I'll be able to get the engine back together next weekend and then I'll be able to evaluate the transmission better. With the anti-freeze leak I didnt want to run it to long so I couldnt check all the gears or the reverser operation. However I didnt hear any thing out of the ordinary when I backed it onto the trailer.

The right steering clutch may become another project. I need to get so I can drive the machine longer so I can really diagnose the problem but from what I can see now it looks like the throw out bearing isnt contacting the pressure plate. I've got a susspision that the clutch is stuck but I think I'll try to adjust it first before I tear the final drive off the machine just to make sure it isnt somthing little.

I'm in New Haven, up near Oswego. I used to work for 5 Star Equipment in east Syracuse. Is yours a cralwer loader or a dozer? I'm hopeing not to need a whole lot more for mine after the engine is finished but if I do I'll keep you in mind. Thanks for the info.
