Re: jd420 pics
Well guys...All bolts out of engine mounts...and the old girl will not let go!! SO I cannot figure what she grabbed onto...Pulled starter to see what that side looks like...now that everything out of way...full of critter nesting....should be a shaft or something from engine into bell housing....possible rusted tite?????? engine move easily kinda rotate right and left a bit, but will not move outward..i have pulled plenty of v8s and straight 6s with a heck of a lot less problems..with and without trannys
so what is catching????? i have less than 1/4 inch visible between bell and engine block???? if this is rust from critter crap gonna be real fun....
If i ever get enough room will I need to use some wood wedges to drive between block and housing????? to get loose
Know that large flywheel is at the backend...so weight back there
by the way...engine hoist legs actually are ust a bit to wide to fit between tracks and lift arm just reaches center of engine...have to slide one leg in first and twist hoist in between tracks...really needs one track shoe off to clear easily

Re: jd420 pics
Well that is my guess anyhow.....
My serial Number is 129803 so skinda at '58 best can see.
And yup critter has bell housing packed pretty good...am wondering if gonna be able to vacuum it out...thru starter hole
will get chance this weekend

Re: jd420 pics
Can you get enough space to remove the clutch bolts? Rotate the engine to get to the next set?
Maybe through the starter opening with a long extension?
Maybe through the starter opening with a long extension?
Re: jd420 pics
Just mite have to do that...it may be possible once i clean critter rap and see...and clean the previous stuck cylinder a bit more...
gonna try to clean now
EDIT...Lavoy,
Well Boys, after perusing the situation a bit....the vacuum will not do job..reach..etc...so why not hook starter back up and crank her over a bit to break the critter crap up and maybe blow it out the bottom???...can turn crank by hand and check that cylinders..sleeves?? are they sleeves? don't jam and push up? before cranking...clutch bolts are enough beneath lip of starter hole so not a straight shot..and rusted
engine unbolted and hanging on lift...just can not pull it out..will have to move my webb strapping off the crank balances before i try it
gonna try to clean now

Re: jd420 pics
I have taught that a sleeve is removable, like dry vs wet. I would use “cylinder wall” to describe your situation. Mouse and rat piss are extreme corrosive. Lots of wiggling, persuasion, several coffee breaks etc.

Btown,...Lavoy...who ever knows
Sleeves or cylinder is not the problem...turns over by hand easily..
Problem is getting the dang engine out...i have 3/4 inch board between engine and bell housing...wiggling crap out f it....and pulling with webb strap ratchet from front on loader crossmember...what is holding this blamed thing now???..actually have a small level on the block and shows level or a little down on front
Ring gear does not protrude that much..and shaft should be out of pilot if I'm 3/4 inch out

Re: jd420 pics
I suspect it is massive corrosion from mouse urine on the trans input shaft trying to pass out of the clutch disc. Wiggle wiggle coffee break, spray, wiggle wiggle, spray lunch. Repeat .
Re: jd420 pics
well hot dam...got it out...cleaned out what i thought was reverser, but dang thing only has the long splined end shaft...clutch linkage...frozen as well as throwout frozen...rest is hollow exception for critter nest...a fine home for the pukes..
so looks like four nuts and fasten to the long box and bell and pedal linkage...pull that sucker out to get to brake and clutch connection..
wigglee wiggle wiggle all dam day and then i hooked come along to it and my truck and put pressure to it...with come-along jumped clear out of housing
good grief..what a job and mess

Re: jd420 pics
Great you got it out. Now on to the next obstacle, this keeps things interesting.
Re: jd420 pics
wel what is answer on the dang reverser...guts dont look like one..just splined shaft clean to tranny and the clutch rod to throwout????? on a loader????
if not here i am happy to just use tranny anyhow...less to fix...had to take the 2 crossover tube off above the bell housing before can even get to try to remove this....dam near four feet long bell to tranny???? and somehow get frozen throwout carrier and mechanism out and keep housing level for entire shaft before lifting out.
from what i could see at flywhheel...the clutch disc totally worn out overall dia looks like 5 or 6 inches..flopping loose..ring gear not missing teeth but rusted up a bit

Re: jd420 pics
Hi,
Well, the 420 didn't have a stock reverser. That was an option. Looks like your original owner didn't opt for one.
So, you have just the regular center frame. And the long propeller shaft.
Unless you have a reverser frame someone gutted and put in the long propeller shaft. That's pretty common, too.
Ah, the fun of figuring out old iron!
