Newbie from MI

Post by pauly68 » Sat Apr 29, 2023 6:08 pm

Recently inherited a 1955 JD40C from my father’s estate. She runs but needs some live!! I’ll be searching here for info and asking for some help.

What I know:

Water pump and radiator both leak.
Big fitting on the hydraulic reservoir leaks.
Only turns right. Hopefully an adjustment is in order.

Also have a 1965 JD 1010 RS hi cropper. Image[/img]

40 does not have a water pump, possible you have a 420? I will have some rebuilt water pumps in a few weeks. New radiators are available, I don't normally keep them in stock.

Hello. I will post a couple pictures once I have a few minutes to figure out how to! Only the 40 is a crawler. The 1010 is four tired hicropper tractor.

I can also post a picture of where the coolant leak is. I was not aware that 40’s don’t have a water pump. It appears then maybe there is a gasket leaking on the bottom front of the motor.

You will need to use a third-party image host (like Imgur, Postimages, etc.) or do a link to a server where they are stored, to post the pictures, you can't put them in directly from your computer or phone. The site has a dedicated picture server where you can store and load pictures from but unfortunately it is currently down.

OK. It is definitely a 40, not a 420 and a 1955 model. I’ll dig into it more in the next couple of weeks, but have a few other projects I need to button up first.

The "water pump leak" is actually the hydraulic pump gasket weeping a touch where it's bolted to the motor. Once I get the radiator out of it to get that fixed up, I'll see if it needs a new gasket or just is loose. I did find the main line out of the hydraulic oil tank was loose so I got that tightened back up. We'll see if that fixes the worst of it!

A note....if your oils are appearing milky and is fairly new...just add "sea Foam" to it...it takes water out and clears up..including hydraulics..water NOT good
