420 had been sitting quite a while and the battery was near dead (plus it was 10 degrees). I removed the hold down with very cold fingers. Slid the battery out enough to put the charger on it.
Aside from the fuel bowl leaking (needed a new gasket) everything was fine and it started right up. My fingers were semi frozen and I just slid the battery in. Didn't replace the hold down. Couldn't see to do it in the shed and my hands were very cold.
Started pushing snow and everything was going very well! Went up the drive to the house and as I started to go onto the cement apron I pushed the clutch pedal.
Here's where ??? Something went south. The battery had slid out...right behind the clutch pedal. Oh well, just turned off the ignition and we stopped right there. Put the battery back in place and it started right up.
??? Throttle not working ??? Engine rev'ed up some. I managed to drive it back to the shed. It varied between an idle and revving. I used the choke to prevent over revving. Throttle linkage is ok, not that.
I'm assuming something happened to the governor when I shut it down abruptly.
I haven't removed it yet. It's 20 degrees out there. Anyone have an idea what it could have done? I have another governor I can put on (I think?) I'll have to locate it.

Make sure that the throttle shaft is not iced up in the carburetor, not uncommon in cold weather.

I could see the shaft move with the throttle lever. Tractor had been running fine for at least 20 minutes. It started right after I killed it from a near full throttle (turned off the ignition switch). Kind of chugged to a quick stop.

I'm debating trying to run it enough to get it in the shop.

I did get it into the shop. Managed to keep it at a high idle until I had it inside. I'll wait until the snow on it melts and it warms up some.

If the throttle shaft is moving, unlikely it is the governor.

I have no control over the engine rpm. It will vary from idle up to out of control. I'm starting to remove the air cleaner so that I can see the linkage. Moving the throttle lever moves the carb shaft, but when the engine is running does not control engine rpm.q
Is it possible that the carb plate came loose?

Bingo!!
Got enough tin off to see a little. Everything seemed to move correctly. I dropped the carb down and could see the plate. Linkage & shaft moved fine plate didn't.
Broken shaft at the first screw hole.
Is just the shaft a available?

Back alive! New carb shaft fixed it. Did a little maintenance while it was in the shop.
