Unfortunately, when I need this new to me machine most, I believe the governor ring in my diesel injection pump is coming apart. Started losing power significantly and rpms would not go/stay high. Let it sit for 20 minutes and it ran good for a minute or two and did the same thing. Internet searches led me to many things to look at and I started with the injection pump as the likely culprit.
Below is a picture of what was supposed to be the check valve. I started by pulling this and it was not obstructed at all. Can see right through it so I’m assuming pieces of governor ring were large enough they were pressured against the fitting hole but couldn’t get through and blocking fuel and when shut down the pieces fell back into the pump. BUT…I’m not even sure this is the correct part/check valve and if it is, it has been completely opened up. I was reading there should be a glass ball and possibly a spring in it. When I pulled these two pieces apart there was nothing like that (no moving parts). Was this the correct part , I’m assuming if it was it was modified? I have no idea how long it could have been like this but I read that can damage the pump. What does having that wide open do to the pump?
Another picture below are the pieces that came out of the timing window of the injection pump. Seems pretty clear this is the governor ring I was reading about and I cannot operate the machine any more until the injection pump is rebuilt. Agree? Since this is an expensive repair I’d like confirmation from others that know more than me before I pull the pump. Again, the pump is where I started and I didn’t check anything else but my understanding is these little black pieces are the kicker.

Yes, those are “mouse turds.” Time for an upgrade to a one piece governor ring.
Best regards,
Bruce

I figured. Dang. Supposed to be clearing small trees and leveling for a garage right now.

In the picture below the remains of a dampener ring is on the left. The black stuff. On the right is the new ring before installation.
The parts of the black dampener ring break into little pieces— mouse turds. As B Town suggests there is a one piece unit that doesn’t have a dampener ring that is also available.

I have bought a kit with the permanent fix to the ring that falls apart. I have also found a local diesel pump rebuild shop to do it for me.

You should replace the check valve at the pump outlet, as you say you can see through it indicates to me the actual check mechanism is missing. You should make sure the return line is open to the tank, as well.
