Van Sickle Paint match for 440ic

Post by Roger440IC » Sat Jan 25, 2025 3:04 pm

Hi,

Has anyone used Van Sickle or Tisco paint for a 440ic?

On their website Van Sickle lists 6 different JD industrial yellow colors, and their CML-3004 is marked (pre-1992). My dozer has been repainted, probably many times, and looks much more yellow than what is shown on their website for the CML-3004. I'm only painting a few parts now, but I might eventually repaint the whole machine, so I'd like to start with the correct color.

Thanks,
Roger

Hi,

I guess I'm pretty simple when it comes to painting tractors. I'd go to John Deere and buy Old Construction Yellow.

There are new and old shades of the green and the yellow, and the Ag yellow is different than the construction yellow. Both old and new.

I have sprayed a few gallons of Van Sickle paint, yellow red gray and orange. It sprays good covers good is reasonably priced.
My experience with them is that they start fading within a year when out in the sun.
I don’t know if the paint John Deere sells is any better, they are both enamels but I will be giving the Deere paint a try.
I believe it is made buy Valspar.

Jimmy,

Did you use their hardener/catalyst (7019)?

I sprayed the front and rear wheels on my JD-2040 4 years ago with their 450 yellow and the catalyst. It's holding up pretty well w/o fade and still has pretty good gloss.

Did you by chance use their CML-3004 yellow (pre 1992 JD industrial)? I was wondering how close the color is to the original.

Thanks

Yes I did use the hardener. The yellow I used was not on a John Deere it was a dirt track race car. It was gloss transport yellow 459.
I didn’t know VanSickle made custom colors until I saw your post.
I did paint a few parts with the same color from a shaky can, no hardener. It did fade more than the paint with the hardener.
The yellow and the red both shine back up with a little cleaner wax.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Van Sickle paint. It'll be interesting to see if the JD paint performs any better.

Hi,

All right! On a race car! There we go!

Tractor enamel is great on race cars. They are almost as hard on paint as crawlers are....

I used to use JD green and ag yellow on my Lotus race cars. The old pre-sponsor Lotus colors were green and yellow - pretty close in shade to JD. I was bringing back old Loti from the dead. I lived near to Lime Rock and it wasn't hard to find such with SCCA log books. Bring them back and run them. Then, sell them and do it all again. The last step is to paint them, hence the JD paint. Oddly no one noticed it was actually JD green and yellow....

Stan
Nothing runs like a Deere. That would be awesome to live close to a track like Lime Rock.

I do know the John Deere paint does not cover as well as the Van Sickle paint.

Hi,

Yeah, we don't have a Dip Pit. That'll always get a lot of paint on things. ;)

I was surprised when I bought my 5103 in 2008 to see that it had been painted in a Dip Pit. I thought those were long gone. It's easy to tell as there are little paint drip bumps along the bottom edges of things.

About paint ....
I have seen that the JD original paint color is still available, but a bit pricy.
Is the Van Sickle 459 "Transport Yellow" a good alternative? Where are you buying Van Sickle? You order from their website, but $40 shipping for 1gal!
I tried some TSC Majic School Bus Yellow that I had lying around - it is more orange tint than the color of my crawler now .... but I'm sure it has already had a rough respray sometime in the past with who knows what.

Not aiming for show condition, but want to be kind of close.

Van Sickle transport yellow 459 on the left. John Deere old construction yellow ty25678 on the right.
Van Sickle will custom mix the John Deere color. 3004 Industrial Yellow Enamel On their website.

I had my closest JD dealer order my paint on there regular order— no shipping.
It was cheaper than the custom mix Van Sickle.
I used to get Van Sickle paint from a Big R / now North 40 farm store.

I finally decided to order the JD paint. No 2nd-guessing myself then, and not much difference in price in the end.

Just a heads up, the primer color seems to make a big difference in the finish shade of the JD paint. It did for me at least. Good paint tho overall. It's held up well for me for 10 years now.
