JD450C Transmission Pump removal

Post by NIKinNZ » Thu Feb 27, 2025 1:51 am

Hello All,

I finally have my engine out of my 1976 450C and i have removed the clutch throwout bearing (and housing), i need to get into the Transmission Pump (situated behind the clutch throwout bearing and spring) to remove it, but i have the spindle and clutch spring etc in the way, how do i remove the clutch return spring? it seems to have sprung back (moving the 'fingers'? against the pump body and im in a bit of a jam. Any help would be appreciated. The spring has quite some pressure. I am needing to remove the pump as i suspect the seal has gone in it as im getting oil from the transmission getting into the bell housing.

You say you have the housing removed. If that is correct there should be nothing in the way of getting at the pump. I am not sure what you are calling the housing and wonder if you are referring to the throwout bearing carrier as a housing.

I think you will want to remove the clutch housing (the good-sized cast part that bolts between the engine and transmission and has the engine clutch and transmission pump inside of it) from the front of the transmission to get the shaft and throwout bearing fork out of the way. You need to unhook the linkage on the outside connecting the pedal to the shaft. I think 4 3/4" bolts hold it to the transmission (there are a couple hollow dowel bushings on two of them for alignment of the clutch housing to transmission. Don't lose them). The little spring that pulls the throwout bearing carrier towards the transmission pump should be able to be unhooked from the carrier with something for a hooked tool to catch the hooked end of that spring to pull it off the carrier. Your manual likely shows the clutch housing removed where it gives you the info on repair of that pump.
