Starter removele 1010 diesel

Post by Keith-OR » Fri Apr 11, 2025 12:55 pm

I had to remove starter from my loader JD 1010, what a pain. Upper nut was easy to remove, BUT the bottom one took me all day and differ ant end wrenches. I ended up buying special 11/16 end wrench. With the special end wrench finally got the lower nut off. Then it was a fight to get starter back and up from between the engine and outside rail. Someone put garden hose over the B+ cable, which made it all most impossible to get the starter out. I am going to remove that darn hose before I put the stater back in.
Remove solenoid. took it apart and was beyond repair. Hooked up 12 volt to starter and it runs fine, but since it is out I will rebuilt it. I ordered new solenoid. I don't want to do this job again,  so everything will be built before I re-install.
tore starter apart needs new brushes and commutator turned. So I will need to fire up my small lathe for generator and starter. Turn armature and install new brushes and new bushings. I think I will even put new bendix on. BETTER to be safe than sorry.

Follow up on 1010 starter

Post by Keith-OR » Fri Apr 11, 2025 10:51 pm

follow up!!!
I did some price checking for parts to rebuild my starter.I was shocked as prices has increased dramatically since the last starter I rebuilt. This solenoid cannot even be rebuilt, a lot lighter inside than Chevy solenoid which can be rebuilt. I will need new solenoid, brushes, Bendix, turn the commutator which is no problem as I have generator/ starter lathe and enamel paint for the winding, plus brass bearings on each end of starter. So after my figures, it will cost me between $150 and $200 tp rebuild my starter, plus my time to do all the work. So I just ordered a USA made starter for little over $300.

Have a great day
Keith
