Re: Barn find 420C getting it going
The story I got from the owner, which owned it since 1972 is as follows. He bought it in 72 and it was shot, all the way around. Between 73 and 74 he did the following. Rebuilt motor/main clutch, pins and bushings in the tracks, straightened rails, replaced all rollers (4 roller) and a new set of deep dish sprockets. In the mid 80's he rebuilt the steering clutches. He has 20 acres of timber land and used it since the mid 70's on small jobs around his property (he estimates 300-400 hours).
I'll take some pictures of the sprockets and track adjusters but from what I can see I believe him. Rear track adjuster nut is 1 & 1/8" from the spring head after I adjusted track sag to 1 & 3/4". Sprockets show little to no wear (judged by someone new to crawlers).
I have used it about 15 hours for pulling logs out of my swampy ground and dozing shale for road building on my property. The only issue I have found is the charging system needs work. I am very pleased and feel lucky to get this gem. Don (the previous owner) was so glad to see it go to a good home he practically gave it away in my opinion.

Some pictures of the undercarriage. Pretty disgusting how dirt it is!! I haven't cleaned it up after dragging logs out of my swampy ground.

Hi,
Hell, that looks pretty clean to me. You use 'em, they get full of dirt.

Re: Barn find 420C getting it going
I have been putting hours on the old 420. Moving shale, building roads and dragging logs. After a good carb cleaning it runs and idles great. I have decided to give it a bath and take it to the local Labor Day show ( feature this year is John Deere). I still have a non-functioning charging system, I'm pretty sure I have a bad generator. Local electrical shop gave me some tests to do and it failed the "motoring" test. Shop said probably burnt windings. With no lights or other electrical draw except ignition it goes forever between battery charges. The fix will probably be a winter project. I'll get some pictures at the show and post.
I am lovin the crawler and getting some long overdue projects done around the farm. I have spent more time working it and not working on it which makes me very happy. LOL
