Welcome to the Boards.

You will likely find your thread moved to the Late Models Board once a moderator sees it, as this Early Models Board is for the 2010s and prior machines.

There are not many here with 550s and they may not have seen you post. I don't understand just what you are looking for as far as help.

I don't have a 550 but changing a starter is like any other, my 450E has the same engine. Removing the starter is pretty straight forward. Unhook the batteries to prevent shorting the battery cable at the starter while working on the starter. Pull the engine side cover off the starter side. Unhook the cables and wires, three bolts that hold it to the flywheel housing, then remove the starter.

You may want to make a wrench to get the back side mounting bolt. Here are some ideas. The wrench size would change if that back bolt is not a hex head bolt or a 3/8 stud with hex nut.

Also a good tech manual is a great place to start. If you don't have one then I highly suggest you get one. You will need it for other things you will undoubtedly come across.

So what is your starter doing? You may not need to replace the whole thing. Tell what it's doing and we will go from there.

287035 is a 1977 serial number according to the list of 550 serial numbers on the FAQ Board here.

The current part number in the 550 parts catalog is SE501415. I don't have part numbers dormant of the aftermarket starter that are sold as "upgrades".

When you say "Where can I buy one?" Are you asking about wrench, manual, or starter?

Go to your local starter shop. Should be a lot easier on your wallet than going through mother deere. I just pulled my starter on the 550 and the local guy replaced the solenoid in about 30 min. The removal and install was miserable.
