Do I have to tap the housing for studs or it is ok to just use bolts and tapered nuts?

Bolts will work, only small issue is you will have a bolt head that you shoe can catch on, but that is very minor.

Update on my side frame repairs. I have had the side frame brackets repaired and reattached to the side frame in their original podsitions. I am now trying to reinstall the side frame and am having trouble positioning it properly in relation to the cross frames. With the side frame bolted in position (loosely) at the axle housing, the cross frames are both 1/2" or more out of position (too far forward) in relation to the side frame brackets. Is there a trick to getting these in place? Do I need to use a porta-power or or similar to move the cross frames back. Are they maybe bent? The other side frame is in place properly. Any suggestions appreciated.
