shift pattern for jd 440

Post by dondeere » Mon May 14, 2012 8:14 pm

I have a 5 speed trans in my 60 440 crawler, the seller told me the shift pattern but I don't think he was correct, what is the correct shift pattern, I see several knobs with different patterns, reverse I know but the rest not so sure, is first the opposite of reverse or is first in the center?

Without going out and looking at one of mine, the Operators Manual shows, top left to right 2-1-4 and bottom left to right R-5-3. So 2 is opposite R and 1 is in the center top. HTH

that is what I thought, the previous owner told me it was 1-2-4
R-3-5

it just did not seem right, I see alot of shift knobs for sale on ebay and the shift patterns were not the same. Makes sense. thanks.

2-1-4
R-5-3 is this correct then? seems weird.

I think there might be a difference on late crawlers, but can't remember.

Glad you mentioned that Lavoy. If I remember right, my service manual has something like 2nd and Reverse switched. I was pretty confused when I put it back together but somewhere I learned that there are two variations. I think it depends on the type of gear that is on the shaft that drives the pto.

Glad to find this thread.
I'm refurbishing a pair of '59 440's - one bucket and one dozer.
Both of them have the pattern:
Top R-1-4
Bottom 2-5-3
I've combed through my service manual and can find zero reference to the shift pattern.
Both came with knobs that have the Reverse and 2nd gear switched from what I posted above.
I was struggling to understand what is going on . . .
Love this message board and the scope of the content.

Knob on the top is on a 59 440ICD
Knob on the bottom is from a late 60 440ICD.
Bottom line is if you put it in 2nd and it goes in reverse it has the wrong knob.
