John Deere 350b reverse problems
Re: John Deere 350b reverse problems
Ok so i messed with dozer today. Checked both brake bands and theu were fine. Now the dozer barely moves in reverse during 1st and 2nd gear. Still fine in third. When i put the shuttle shift back to neutral while in reverse i can hear grinding for one to two seconds while whatever shaft stops spinning. Any ideas now? Makes no noise if in nuetral and move the shuttle shift from reverse to forward. Is there a shaft that only spins while in reverse?
Re: John Deere 350b reverse problems
We can guess and throw out possibilities for a long time. Pressure checks and taking the top off the transmission have been suggested. With the top off the transmission you can see the transmission gears and try lifting and wiggling shafts to see if a bearing is bad. The reality of this to me, from your descriptions, is it will need to come apart for repair. I believe you run the risk of really causing destruction in the driveline if you keep trying to move it, again based on your descriptions. I'm not trying to be rude but there comes a point when you have to open it up and look. JMHO.
You didn't answer before if you had, or have since gotten, a technical (aka service) manual (TM1032)? The manual should have transmission power flow drawings in it to help you check it out. You can use the John Deere on line parts catalogs for free to look at the components in your driveline. Here is a link to the 350B crawler tractor parts catalog PC1169.

Re: John Deere 350b reverse problems
Something is broken, only way to tell what is to pull the top off the transmission and find out what it is, or eliminate it as a source, all else is just wild guess, and the more you try to diagnose without tear down, the higher the repair bill will likely be.

I will be tearing into the dozer toward the end of the week. Will let everyone know what the results are.

Re: John Deere 350b reverse problems
Update,
Currently have rops, both final drives, tanks, and battery box removed from dozer. I believe the problem exists within the transmission. Should have the trans pulled out by subday afternoon. The dozer is an inside mount six way blade. I have approximately 10 hours into the teardown so far. 3 hours was devoted to cleaning and running to the parts store. Will keep everyone posted.

Re: John Deere 350b reverse problems
Finally reached tranny. The bearings and gears are torn up. Any advice on purchasing new gears and bearings? Also how hard is it to rebuild the trans?
Thanks
Thanks

Amazing how similar your problem was to mine...I got lucky and only had to replace the input shaft bearings....
I don't know where you live but I have two spare 350's that might work for you if Lavoy can't get you going.

Re: John Deere 350b reverse problems
Im ready to pull the tranny. Down to the last four bolts. I am just wondering if i can jack up the reverser and engine to get the trans to clear the rear crossbar? I have the service manual but it is not very specific in this area. Thanks guys.

Re: John Deere 350b reverse problems
I had to scotch the front of the engine when I pulled mine. The motor out weighted the rear of the dozer and would have tipped otherwise. I also jacked and scotched under each side of the crossbar between the dozer and the tracks to help. This is what caused the dozer to tip.
I feel like the higher the dozer is off the ground the easier removal will be...within reason...4"-6", enough to clear the sprockets from the tracks.
If you're on a shop floor then just jack both up ends up and separate the two. A transmission or engine jack with the big platform would make this possible...I didn't have this option, so I did it the hard way.
I attached a chain to hold the front of the dozer as I pulled the transmission off...never got the correct angle for it to slide right off, so I was left lifting and pulling with the tractor bucket until she came loose. I did it quite violently with not worries. Without the chain I was pulling the entire dozer.
Use a chisel to help separate the reverser from the transmission if you can. This will ensure the coupler between the two has been freed.

Re: John Deere 350b reverse problems
Dumb question but if my doze does not have reverse in the transmission only through the reverser.... and my second and reverse gear is bad, what would happen if i replaced my second gear only with the second and reverse sliding gear? Would it not affect anything since i wouldnt be shifting it into reverse?
Re: John Deere 350b reverse problems
Just wanted to update everyone... the transmission was bad in my dozer and i got lucky and found a good used one locally. All back in and up and running.
Thanks

It's a good feeling to know all the work pays off.
