Oil Filter Cover

I have a question about the oil filter cover on an MC, 40, 420, 430, etc.
Most of the filter cover's I have seen look like this:

However, I have run across a few that look like this on the top:

I have always assumed that these have been overtighten at some point in time and have been collapsed in.
These are fairly heavy material and it seems to me like they would take quite a bit to collapse them like this.
Am I correct that these are bent or were there some made like this?

I have seen more like photo A than B, but they were manufactured both ways.

Folks must use a pretty long wrench to do that to one. Maybe a big, fat monkey wrench?

It must happen pretty often, given the number I have seen like that. Plus, it looks uniform enough that I always figured some were just made that way.

That was my thoughts as well Stan, they always look to be very uniform when crushed.

Sure, no sense replacing the gasket when it leaks, just put a big box end on there and crush the hell out of it, that'll fix the problem!

I just changed the oil and filter in my 55 40C. But oil is now slowly seeping from the nut at the top of the cover. It's hard to be 100% sure about the bottom seal as oil slowly moved to where the cover meets the assembly.
I tightened this as much as I dare. It wasn't leaking before, and I really wish I had left it alone, but not having had this problem with my first 40C, I thought a simple filter change would be a walk in the park!
Would a replacement filter cover solve this problem? Used, I'm sure.
Are these available? If so, where and how much?
