Post by blakearmstrong2016 » Sun Mar 13, 2016 7:54 pm

so i jus bought my first JD crawler 420c I think its a 1956 inside track blade system.

has to issues the dozer blade slowly leaks down I think it maybe the lift cylinders leaking down internally . no external leaks has anyone rebuilt them? have any pictures? where to buy parts?

second issue is the machines brakes don't work pedal is missing return spring however pedal pushed nothing happens big job to fix ? worth fixing?

Blade leakage is predominately bad seals in the cylinder/s. Not a hard fix, just tear down and new cups and seals.
Hard to guess on brake pedal, may be simple, may be tough, not enough info to tell for sure.
Worth it is up to you and what you want out of the crawler.

Hi,

Both of mine have been dripping out the rod ends for years. Decades, really. Dad had added a couple aluminum 'keeper rings' over the rods to back up the seals. He passed in 1995 and those rings are still there.

One day, I will fix them properly. Just as soon as they get to really leaking and not just dripping. ;)

Another thing is check your lever rod adjustments. The 420 has the scheme where they remote the lever from the valves. The rods may be adjusted to where the let a little oil flow when in the neutral position.
