JD350 Track adjuster rebuild

Post by northidaho » Thu Jan 10, 2019 11:24 pm

I have a straight 350 that has one old style adjuster. Is it possible to rebuild. It loses grease from around the grease fitting & relief area.

Short answer is yes it is rebuildable, the real question is what parts you really need. Just some thoughts as it doesn't seem that area would leak, seal leaks, I've seen, normally appear at the rod end. Have you cleaned the area well? Have you checked to see if the housing itself is cracked in that area? Have you checked the grease fitting for damage? Have you had the relief screw out? If so did the check ball that belongs under the relief screw get out and lost? That happens sometimes when people take the screw out to slack a track and the ball comes out unseen in the grease. After you clean the area, you might pump some grease to it to force the idler ahead and see where the grease comes out. You can slack the track off to the proper tension after. Or you might use your bucket roll and some blocking to push back on the idler to see where the grease comes out. Be sure to set the blocking up carefully so it doesn't kick out on you. Just my thoughts.

Thanks. I will clean it better and check for cracks, The grease comes out slowly in a curlicue shape about 3/16 in diameter between the 2 fittings. It is only noticeable after a few hours of use.
The cylinder & rod area dose not leak.

There should be one fitting and one plug. As JIM B said, there should be a steel ball in behind the plug to seal the grease from pushing out. If you remove the plug and collapse the track tension a little, to get grease to push out, the ball should be in that grease. I don't remember the ball diameter but, you can use a ball from a ball bearing that fits into the hole.

Here is the parts breakdown so you can see what should be there. The ball may be a little corroded or otherwise damaged. To get by for a bit, you may be able to break the lock nut (#6) loose on the screw (#7) that holds the ball and tighten the screw down a bit, then reset the locknut. The ball is less than a dollar by the price I see at my JD dealer and they can be found other places as well. If you don't have a parts catalog you can use the free, on-line one. Either JDParts Homepage or JD Parts Advisor should get you to the parts catalogs.

Thanks for the help
I cleaned the area and found no cracks. I will check to see if the ball is damaged or missing and the fitting condition. and report my findings.
It looks like some seepage from the seal so I will tear it down and put a seal kit in it. since I will have to split the track to do some trany work now.

I bought the wrong rebuild kit for my cylinder rebuild...905000. if you want/need them they're yours...just let me know.

Also the correct kit was 905002...just a "o ring",oil seal, and ball.

You never know if and when the adjuster has been swopped from another unit.
