440 trans quill/bearing retainer

Post by ddaxe » Tue Oct 08, 2019 9:43 am

Firstly, it's nice having 3 machines to pick from to build 1. But, it's made
more difficult when one of those machines is above the 448000 serial and the other 2 below.. Case n point, while disassembling the above serial, the quill that goes on the side of trans had 1 with the center stub that the release bearing twists on broken about a 1/3 of the way around. I quickly discovered the below machines quill bearing size is smaller. Question is... How
much stress is put on that stub..?? I'm thinking of machining it out of the casting .. making a new stub.. and pressing the new piece in with an interference fit. my reasoning is.. I'd like to stay with the larger pieces in the above serial machine as it seemed fine when I was running before. Unless it's something I should adding to the growing parts shopping list...?? I don't know how the other 2 machines trans are.. but know this one was fine when I was running it before the reverser
locked up... Tks

Seems like a lot of work for what is a readily available part.

I remember when I 1st posted a pic of the machine, yourself (Lavoy) pointed out that it had a 1010 undercarriage. So I have kept that in mind as work progresses. That being said, the part number on the quill is T11581... and it doesn't appear in the 440 parts catalog. So I assume it's more 1010 pieces?? , though the trans case is a "396" (last 3#'s) I definitely need to make a decision on what direction I am going to take. And.. Yes.. I agree.. it would time consuming to go to those lengths to fix that piece.. it's good to know they are available..
Tks Lavoy...

My guess is I said it had 1010 rails, not at all uncommon, I have them on mine. 1010 quill is completely different than 440 no way it interchanges, and trans is completely different as well, no way to interchange. Casting numbers do not always correspond to part numbers, that could be a factor too.

I really appreciate your feedback Lavoy... it can be a daunting task trying to figure out what was what with 60 year old iron. All 3 of mine have many farmervations and or bush fixes, though I'm undeterred by it and will keep forging ahead...
