440’s at work

Post by jimmydiesel » Wed Jun 04, 2025 9:47 pm

I have 3 440’s that are currently work wise. My father in-law has built roads most of his life. He has moved and is living with us.
So we have been busy working around the shop and in the back yard.

Still chasing oil leaks, worn out hydraulic cylinders, broken front idlers, overheating etc, etc, etc
We are getting a lot of dirt moved and are having fun.

The 440ICD 602. ( Ole Smoky ) hadn’t got to play for the last couple months so we put him to work again.

My grandson, 10 and granddaughter,4 were visiting for a few days so I was training the next generation of operators.
After going over the controls I sat behind the grandson and we moved back and forth a few times turning right and left. Then we started pushing a little dirt.

After 15 minutes he seemed to be figuring it out so I got off and let him practice.

We came back the next day and reviewed the controls and he operated it for an hour and a half.

The 4 year old granddaughter thought the dozer was too loud but she wanted to drive the backhoe.

Very enjoyable few days.

Being able to have the grandkids come and play with grampa’s toys has been great. Telling my wife that the equipment was for the grand kids worked for a while. Not so much anymore.

I took the blade attachment off the 440IC 831 and put the bucket back on. Time to move some dirt.

We have been raising the grade in front of the shop using material excavated from behind it.

Hi,

My grandkids don't like my equipment. It is dirty. In fact, they don't like visiting the farm at all. It is dirty. They can't figure out how Grandpa and Grandma stay alive amongst all the dirt. Sigh.

Stan aka Grandpa, who is now thinking about adding a 4020 Powershift to the fleet. And doesn't mind if it is dirty. ;)

I don’t think my grand kids “like” the dirt but are ok with it. When we are done their parents want them in the shower first thing.
When they come to visit without mom and dad we have different rules. More than anything they like to go fishing. I am ok with that.

Nothing like getting the grandkids involved at a young age. Had my daughter's 7-yeard-old boy out for a ride a week go on my recently acquired JD 40C. Then taught my son's 12-year-old daughter to drive it this last weekend. They love it! Fortunately, their parents are supportive.
