1010c Rebuild thread

Post by reedgmi » Mon Sep 08, 2025 7:14 pm

It started simple enough. My son came home at Christmas, and said "Dad, you need a dozer". Obviously, I answered "I do?" And the chain reaction started....
He had found a very cute Deere machine. I have restored a couple of old tractors, but this crawler stuff is a bit new to me. I thought it was decent shape, but I misjudged. I could see the front idlers were worn, so I knew that would be a task. Once I got it home, I realised the track carriers had a lot of wear with the cross shafts. Then I saw that the clutch housing was cracked, because bolts were loose and missing. Finally, I figured out every structural fastener was compromised somehow. I guess someone got lazy with re-assembly, perhaps after the engine replacement.
By this time, I was too deep into it to back out. And it is cute, worth saving. A gallon or two of paint is going to work wonders.
So here we are : the point of maximum disassembly. Going to clean this up a bit more, then paint it before the frosty nights start. Then piece by piece, things will get cleaned/rebuilt/repaired/pained/reassembled. No set timeline.

Going to be an adventure .... will document in this thread.

Big milestone today! 2 coats of epoxy primer on the main chassis & frame rails. Took longer than I wanted to source the clutch housing, replacing a cracked one. Would have been nice to have painted with the final drives already assembled, but too much work to do on them still, and didn't want to miss the great outdoor-painting weather we've been having in Michigan. Top coat tomorrow.

1st round of painting done! I used Deere paint, even though I'm not a big fan of spraying alkyd enamels. Interestingly, the recommended "Deere Paint Thinner" is no longer available, at least in Michigan. Replaced by a low-VOC version, which is just acetone. But Chat GBT came to the rescue, and suggested that original Deere thinner is 50% Mineral Spirits, 30% Naptha, 20% Xylene. For warmer weather, it was suggested to modify to 60% Mineral Spirits, 20% Naptha, 20% Xylene. So that's what I mixed up and used - at a ratio of 10:1. I sprayed 3 coats, which used about 1/2 gal of paint.

A lot of components still to clean, repair & paint, but this was the big one of course.

Got a coat of primer on my next batch of parts - which included the hydraulic pump - only to spot fluid seeping around the pump body. I knew it had been leaking, but thought it was the shaft seal. Tore it down, only to find a disaster inside. Heavy scoring of the body, well past the wear limits for every dimension listed in the manual.

I figured out these pumps are a standard SAE Type A, CCW, around 13 GPM. So I bought a generic gear pump, 1.71 cu in/rev, for $150. Should be 13 GPM @ 1800 rpm.
