350B WINCH instal with no pto lever

Im trying to find out how I can put a winch on a 350B that doesnt have a pto control lever.

What are you trying to install for a winch? The 350B used the JD model 3315 power winch. Does your 350B have a power shaft already installed and sticking out the back of the crawler? If it does have a shaft, is it the winch power shaft (it has a short splined outer end) or a PTO power shaft (This one has a common 1-3/8", 6 spline PTO end)? The winch power shaft is not disconnected with a lever like a PTO. The winch power shaft turns all the time as the 3315 winch is a self-contained (it has its own internal hydraulic pump) hydraulically operated winch.

Hi,

If your 350 does not have the winch power shaft already, then you will have to acquire the necessary internal parts and install them into the transmission. Not an easy task. Especially as these machines are built around the transmission.

I realize what winch I need, I have no shaft sticking out the back and no lever to disengage the shaft. Every 350 Ive had with a winch you could disengage the shaft. Is a 350 B different? Can I just put a shaft in from the back? Is the coupling in there for the shaft to go into? Thanks Dan

I don't have direct knowledge of the 350B but in looking at the parts catalogs it does appear the B needs the PTO control lever and related parts like the straight 350. The winch drive shaft and the PTO shaft were different, but they used the same shaft and control arrangement in the transmission to drive the outer shafts. The 350C was where the option of a winch power shaft drive without the lever and related parts the PTO needs started, as the shaft was different in the transmission when no control lever was used.

Looking inside your transmission is the best way to tell for certain what is missing or already in there.

Edit: I see in the prior post that the Straight and B used the same drive for both the PTO and Winch. I had a C with the winch drive and the manuals show the two use different parts. So, what follows is for the C and the D. The part about the shaft length and splines still apply.

There is no control lever for the Winch shaft. It turns all the time. The control is on the winch itself.

There is a control lever for the PTO shaft. And the PTO shaft won't drive the winch.

The Winch shaft sicks out from the rear a slight distance. The PTO shaft sticks out a much longer way. And the splines are very different.

Adding either one means getting down into the heart of the transmission. To pull the trans, the engine, reverser and both final drives have to come off. It's not an easy job. I recall helping my Dad do this for a few JD350 crawlers when I was a kid. I can't say as I would ever want to do this again. Well, if I had to get into a trans for another reason, then I would add such. Provided I could get the parts these days.
