440ic started knocking...

2cyl gas dozer started knocking last weekend...Any common easy problems to look for first, or am I going to be rebuilding this over the winter?

Check the rod bearings, but normally by the time they are knocking, the damage is already done.

I don't know what the knocking sounded like, but before you pull the engine you might want to be sure that the hydraulic pump is attached securely and that the engine mounting bolts are tight.

Other than that, there are no major mysteries about the engine - and alas no easy fixes.
