Greetings all,
I have just purchased an 440 ICD last week. It is actually in good shape but has been idle for a decade.....outside.
First question. Are there different ratios available in the final drives? The reason I ask is that the last owner (30 years) said he had changed the right side final (cracked case) and thought it had a higher ratio than the original.
He has the original too but I have not picked it up.
Also, how likely is it that the motor may be stuck? (starter isn't working yet)

In 440's altogether, there were 3 different gear sets. The one you should have is 55 and 14.

Lavoy,
Are the final drive ratios related to serial number/year produced
on the 440 or the result of optional requests? Thanks,Jim Anderson

Gas first used 55 and 14, late gas used 56 and 13, all diesel used 55 and 14. Not sure why the diesel never got the same gears as the later gas crawlers, it would have made sense.

If I find that my (wrong) ratio is the later 13/56 should I try to locate another 13/56 and change the original drive to it? Would it be better to have the lower ratio?

It won't hurt anything. I don't know why they kept 14 and 55 in the diesels, but they did.
13 and 56 will be the hardest to find used, only late 440 gas used them. 14 and 55 is late 420, all 430, all diesel 440, early gas 440, so are more common.
