JD 440 Drive Problems.....Reverser or main clutch?
JD 440 Drive Problems.....Reverser or main clutch?
I have JD 440 with a 2 cyl jimmy diesel and it seems to be lacking power....It will only run in 1st or 2nd gear and the reverser does seem to work........It may need tightening up but i am not sure.....When i release the main clutch sometimes I have to pull it back with my foot or it will not fully release.....what is my problem? also i need rails on the right side...they are worn down into the pins...would that take all of the power out of my dozer? it seems to freewheel ok when im on a hill in neutral...there just seems to be a major loss of power

I have found another problem to add to the mess I already have. My final drive was rebuilt on the left side...but on the right side...the side that is worn out the final drive has problems (I think) the hub that the sprocket attaches to has walked out 1/2 inch compared to my newly rebuilt left side....what would cause this? I guess that the bearings are shot...but what would make that shaft walk out?

ok thanks....when I take it apart i will have a look at it...I hope that hasnt done a lot of damage...when I had the other side rebuilt it cost me $2500 cdn by the time i was done...new shaft and housing...bearings...etc.etc etc...So would all of these problems together (worn pins, shaft slid over etc) be the reason why i have no power with this dozer? It seems really gutless

Re: JD 440 Drive Problems.....Reverser or main clutch?
I am not sure, but I would say your engine clutch is slipping. If you have to pull the clutch pedal back with your foot, then your linkage needs to be oiled or your pressure plate springs are weak/broken.dozermark wrote:When i release the main clutch sometimes I have to pull it back with my foot or it will not fully release.....what is my problem?
After watching the video, your engine has power, but it does not get the power past the clutch. I bet you can drive in first or second without pushing something but as soon as there is load applied, you lose your foward motion....
I do not have a reverser, maybe that is slipping...

It seems like your 2-53 is not running at top RPM. They are made to run wide open to make the most power and to be efficient.
I bought an affordable laser tach to set my RPM. Mine was not running wide open when I got it.

JD440ICD2006,
You might want to reduce the size of your avatar (that's the picture or icon of your crawler in the left column under your name). You have a really nice looking machine and the picture looks good, but it scrunches all of the other text on the right side of the screen.
I had the same problem too when I first uploaded my picture. The solution was to just keep shrinking down the picture in my photo editing program and upload it the same way and to the same location as the original. Basically overwriting it. After playing around for a couple of attempts, I finally got one to keep within Lavoy's default left column size.
I mention this here instead of in a private message, because I thought others might like to know. It also works for photos that are inserted in the body of message posts. You will notice that sometimes posted pictures are so large that you have to scroll to the right side off the screen to read all of the text. A little trial and error will get the perfect picture size.

update: I fired up my dozer today and took it for a rip...Now here is where i get a little confused. Is the brake pedal connected to the clutch pedal? I fiddled with the clutch pedal...and got more power....my clutch must have only been half releasing....If i push in my brake pedal (right side) the clutch pedal goes down too...and I can change gears...it seems weird to me...also when i push the brake pedal down it pulls the steering clutch levers into the dash...what is going on here? as for the reverser...im gonna keep it in forwards as the reverse part seems to have half the power than forward..

The clutch pedal is supposed to pivot around the left brake shaft, there is supposed to be a zerk fitting there to grease it. I have one that is stuck solid. and it is kinda difficult to get down in there with a 831 loader in the way. Need to get it up in the air and see what I can do from the bottom.
Stepping on the brake pedal tightens the bands on the steering brakes, this may be why you see the steering levers move when you get on the main brakes.

Correct, the clutch petal should move independantly of the brake petal. your clutch shaft and brake shaft are rusted together(it is a shaft in a tube). From what you are describing if you have half the power with the reverser in reverse that means that it is out of adjustment and the rear clutch pack is slipping. If continued use like this it will burn up the clutch pack in short order. If you don't have the service manual, get one along with the parts manual to be able to visualise what the adjustment procedure means. Mine wasnt that hard to adjust but then again I have a dozer and I understand it can be a P.I.T.A
to adjust the rear clutch pack due to the loader framework. Also you must use the main engine clutch(foot clutch) and let the machine come to a complete stop before shifting the reverser or you will destroy the clutch disks in the reverser.
Do a search on reverser and you will find lots of good information.
Good luck,
Chuck
