Reverser Drain Plug Stripped

Post by NickC » Sun Nov 01, 2009 11:12 am

All,
You guys have been great, helping me get my 350 back in good condition.
In changing fluid in the reverser, I found the drain plug, a surprisingly small (3/8") allen plug, frozen in place and irremovable because it had been previously rounded out. It looks like my only option now is to drill it out and attempt to remove the remainder or re-tap the hole for a larger plug. Am I doing the right thing here? Is there a better way to approach this?
Thanks again,
Nick

Might look at getting a nut just large enough to fit over the plug, weld it to the plug and use a wrench or socket to get it out. I have done that on many rounded off bolts.

Excellent suggestion. Not being a welder, it didn't occur to me. I'll ask my buddy to try that tomorrow. Thanks.

Yes that can work, I did it about 2 weeks ago on my reverser, welded a nut on it and it came right out :D

Why is there such a tiny little drain plug in that case? There's 3 gallons of oil in there! The trans has a 1/2" plug with a 9 quart capacity. Strange.
