350B bull gear play??
350B bull gear play??
I'm rebuilding the final drive on a 73 350B. I was reinstalling the main spindle and when it was torqued, the bull gear will slide on the shaft 160 thousanths. Is this normal, or is the spacer worn that much? Does anyone know how long the T21146 outer bushing should be? I have checked the parts breakdown and I have everything installed that should be there.

I had the shaft end play set according to the manual. I can't see any obvious wear on this spacer, but I suppose if it wore over 30 years it wouldn't be obvious. I think I'm going to make an additional spacer unless someone can come up with the how long that tube should be so I'm positive thats whats wrong.

I'd appreciate it I would like to know after you pop the bottom cover off if the bull gear slides at all on the shaft, and if so how much. Also the length of items 18 and 3 in the above illustration.
I've been talking with Deere, and all they can think of is that someone swapped flanged axels at some point in this machines history.

I agree with Ken, if everything is in place, once #7 in the above is torqued to specks the bull gear should be tight on the shaft. Your JD parts man may be on the right track with orphan parts being in there.

Ok I took it apart, you may want to consider this also the dozer only has 1050 hrs. on it, I've got it completely apart nothing has shown much ware, everything in the final looked good, now this is what I came up with, the bull gear did move, checking from side of gear to side of case about .075, item 18 measured 3.870, item 3 measured .463, after it was apart I stood the axle up put 18 over axle then the gear then item 3, and measured from 3 to top of flange on axle [where the bearing goes on] it was 1 in. the thickness of the bearing was 1 in. soooo you would think that when you tighten the nut you would have no clearance, sooo I dont know if I could have tighten the nut on mine before I took it apart and it would have takened the slack up or not I guees I'll find out when I put it back, hope this helps some.

Ok I figgured out what was wrong. As much as it pains me to admit it I wasn't careful on the reassembly. The smaller tapered roller bearing on the nut side... it's race was not seated. I can't believe that it did not seat when it was torqued, but it didn't. This allowed the shaft to be torqued and the preload to be achieved and still allow slop in the bull gear. Put it together RIGHT this time and the slop is just about gone. Gear still rocks a bit, but this machine has over 5000 hrs on it so that wear would be expected.
