Hello out there....I have a 1969 JD 450 Crawler/Loader/Backhoe that needs engine work. Two shops suggested a new "Short Block" with all new parts with quotes of about $8,000. A mechanich who used to work for the local JD Dealer and who had looked and tested my machine, told me that all it needed was new Piston Rings, New Fuel Injectors and to re-build the Injector Pump. He said that that should get me by as I only want the machine for some hobby work such as clearing trails, digging out rocks & boulders, pushing some dirt, etc. I haven't fooled around with engine work for many many years, so I don't want to try the work myself. Hard to find good repair shops in Oneonta, NY. Anybody have any suggestions or realistic cost estimates?
Thanks guys!

I would look for a good used engine at your local tractor or equipment wrecker. We often buy older compressors at RB auction just for the deere engines. I am assuming that you have a natural 4219. The ingersol rand units usually has the 4239, which is a bit bigger and is a direct replacement. We usually get the comprssors for $1,500 to $2,000 which is much cheaper than most rebuilds.

Hi, I have a rebuilt 219 that I intend to eventually install in my 450C. The only reason I might be interested in selling it because I dont have the time to swap it out and the guy that rebuilt it for me needs a core. The only thing it will need is a injector pump as I was gonna use the one on my 450C. If its something you are interested in PM me.

Andrew

when I was considerable younger we flew to Osweago (landed at Fulton ) using the lake and light house as vfr reference, As I remember it that was near a lot of farming - - have all farms disappeared ? if not they would have somebody or know somebody that would work at a reasonable price.

Hi Angelo-

There is a member with ID "Jdemaris" that is a former JD mechanic in upstate NY. I'm sure he could give you some ideas of a local shop if you wanted one.

He used to post on here, and still posts on the YT discussion board if you can't PM him on here. Just a thought.

Hello One Welder; I will do a search for him "jdemaris"....thanks for the lead.

Hello JD Thomas; I don't know if my engine is a 4039 engine. I LOOKED AT THE LISTING ON CRAIG'S lIST AND I WILL CONTACT HIM and check ity out. Thanks for the info.

Hello Andrew; Again, I don't know if my engine is a 219 or a 4039 or if they are identical. My machine is an early 450 before they started using B or C or D etc after the 450. so wouild an engine from a 450C fit okay? What is the price on yours? Thanks!

Hello Ken; The mechanic was working for ther local JD Dealership at the time when he tested the piston rings and the injector pump, and the compression was poor on everything! I watched him do the tests. Then about a year later, I ran into him while he was working at a new job, not as a mechanic and he remembered me and my machine. It was then that he told me that all it needed was new rings, new injectors and a rebuilt injector pump. I asked him and others and some recommended a big truck rebuilding place and they quoted me $8,000 and they wanted to do the work not inside the building shop, but outside in the parking lot in the wintertime! I didn't like that idea! Thanks for the input, I will look around.

Hello JD Thomas;
Did you buy a rebuilt engine from that same guy in Horsham, PA? If so, how was the engine?

Hello JWB;
You say "Compressor", is that a Edmponton reference to a Diesel Engine?
What is a 4219 or a 4239 engine? as compared to a 219 engine. Why an Ingersol Rand, did they build the engines for John Deere 450 machines??? Sorry, but these names and numbers are all "greek" to me. Alspo, what is an RB Auction?

No I bought mine from a guy in WV. I saw a that one afterwards, the one I got came out of a air compressor as well, only thing I had to do was swap out the plate between the motor and tranny. And the main pulley on the front of the motor that drive the hyd. pump. However the one on my 4-202 was a 1/4" keyway and the one on the 4-039 was 5/16" keyway. So I broched and it ended up not working so I just modded the one on the motor and drilled it adapting the plate that drives the pump to it. Now my dilema is that the new motor doesnt have a hole in the timing cover for the power steering pump so I am gonna have to swap out covers now. But I dont think an org. 450 has power steering.... What I did was started googling "4 cylinder deere" everyday for about a month then finally found one. But I never saw the machine I am working on run.. So I took the radiator to get boiled and pressure checked well it was bad so now I am waiting on it, $525.00 later I hope I will be ready to get it working again. I am under the impression that a 4-039, 4-219, 4-239 ae pretty much the same mold of a motor just gotta watch if you dont have turbo it might end up being alotta work to change it over to it.

Angelo, If you have a 450 and the engine hasnt been replaced you have a 202. 450Bs and 450Cs had a 219. I will have to check again, but I believe I have 2500 into my engine plus I have to give the guy a core. It has new pistons, liners, rod and main bearings, balance bars, oil pump, camshaft, valves, injectors. Crank was polished, water pump rebuilt, and the block and head were sent to a machine shop. If its something you are interested in PM me or call.

there are a few engines that will fit right in your machine.

1. 4219 (4 cylinder, 219 cubic inches, naturally aspirated.) this is the factory engine for all 450 and some 450B

2. 4219 T (4 cylincer, 219 cubic inches, turbo charged) Factory engine for some 450B and all 450C crawlers.

3. 4239 (4 cylincer, 239 cubic inches, natural aspirated)

RB Auction is Ritchie Bros Auction. Check them out on the internet to see if they have a sale in your area. I am lucky being in Edmonton as we most likely have more sales per year here than any where else in the world.

With regard to compressors, i am talking about a motor driven diesel aircompressor that is manufactured by Ingersoll Rand. IR uses deere engines in their compressor. Alot of these come up for auction and we like to buy them in a non-running state in the dead of winter when they cannot be started. Usually by 1 to 5 compressor a year at Ritchie Bros. The uses the 4219, 4239 and the even bigger 4276 in their compressors. We use the engines in either equipment we own, buy equipment with bad engines or sell the engines outright.

We do not like to spend lots of money fixing equipment or fixing stuff that is not broke. It seems strange that the rings and the injectors and the injection pump are poor on your engine. If we had this engine, we would just put some rings in it and see how it runs. Easy to change the injections and pump after the rings have been done.

He was suggesting a unit such as this portable compressor may have a J D engine that would be useable in your crawler.
