hydraulic pump disconnect

Post by tjdub » Wed Jan 12, 2011 9:35 am

Do all 450s have a hydraulic pump disconnect lever? I was following a discussion about cold weather starting a 440 skidder on a different forum and saw it mentioned that the skidder has a destroker valve on the pump. I went to jdparts to see if the pump on my 450 (w/6-way) had a similar pump. It doesn't but there is a Pump Disconnect system listed.

My dozer is out in the woods right now so I can't check it out, but I've never seen this lever behind the grill. Maybe I just didn't notice it? Is this only a part for backhoe models with the larger pump?

Even though this thread I am linking pertains to 350s, I wonder if it also applies to 450s? It basically says that 350s were originally equipped witha hydraulic disconnect lever but because they were ineffective they were discontinued on later 350s.

I believe you will find the lever on the right side just behind the radiator.

I originally thought that the lever was behind the grill which would have made sense, but then I realized that it was originally located on the outside of the machine (as you say.) Even if my dozer did have this lever at one time it was no doubt removed long ago. Having that lever hanging out there to catch on brush seems like it would totally defeat the purpose of the limb risers and engine panels that are installed on the machine :)

No, not outside the machine but between the frame rails. Actually I believe the cross shaft mounted through the cast bracket that the pump bolts to. You would have to remove the RH side panel and look down in between front of engine and radiator.

Thanks pdmech08, I'll check that out. The side panels have an access port there that slides open for access to the dipstick and oil filter, so I probably won't need to remove it to see.

Sure enough, my dozer does have this lever (it's right below the oil filter). Not surprisingly, it doesn't seem to work though :)

hi,

mine wasnt working aswell.
The shaft (no 9 on the picture) was frozen and the pin (no 12) was broken.

I made it work again. it took some heat and a new spring (no 8).

I don't know if it helps with easyer starting for the engine but i know if the battery isnt strong enough i know it dit ist best.
