will a winch off a 540B log skidder fit a 450C dozer?

The big thing between dozer and skidder is gear ratio you won't get much pull when attached to a dozer.Digitup.

I was always under the impression that a deere winch was interchangable between a 440 and 540A skidder to 450's up to and E and 550's up to a B. We have never run into problems with selling a guy a skidder winch to mount on a crawler. I have also never noticed any speed differences between running a winch on a crawler or a winch on a skidder, although I wasn't looking for a difference in line speeds.

I find it takes the winch from a unit with the power to drag you from anything [Dozer winch on dozer]to a unit that may get you out of a hole when you aren't in too deep [skidder winch on a dozer].A dozer winch on a 450C at bare drum will haul ass at an idle .The skidder winch will stall out the engine at an Idle and is considerably quicker on the winding in I would say there is a ratio difference.I know they work but are slightly different.They will both balance up a dozer nicely and I feel they add to the traction and track life of the 450 and 550 dozer as well .It takes away from the front heavy of the blade.Digitup.

Are you sure about that?

The 450 crawlers all had a standard 1000RPM PTO out the back. I have no idea if the same is true for the 440/540 skidders, but the gears in the winches look like the same parts. (e.g. same 47 tooth ring gear in both winches).

LOL the winch on my 420 you engage it and you can fall asleep. The 100 feet takes 25 mins to wind up.

Every thing I ever had was a 540 spline and I have had six of them on 550s .I only had one other on a 450C and I bought it and swapped it to a 550 A that was also a 540 spline but the dozers I had never turned PTO speeds of more than 450-480 max .I have had several on forage harvesters loads of power and no throw .No my PTO were always seven spline .I haven't seen anything else. Anything different would still go into the same output shaft !.Digitup.
