question for the 430 crawler gurus

Post by ebayfreakca » Mon Oct 31, 2011 5:05 pm

this maybe be a stupid question but i have to ask. I have a john deere 430 crawler and i'm gradually repairing parts that have been neglected for years. I was using it the other day to push down some trees and i noticed upon strain that one side of the tracks started spinning but the other side didn't respond. seems it was only forcing one side. Is that the way the final drives operate or are both sides positive traction. I have used the tractor many times but it's the first time i noticed it doing that. I'm a newbie and wouldn't want to destroy anything if it's not working properly.
any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
if it ain't old i don't want it!

The carrier for the ring gear in the transmission is solid, no differentiation. It is a true "locker".
Both tracks should spin under the situation you wrote about. I suspect that the non driving side steering clutch is a. worn out and slipping, b. out of adjustment and slipping or 3. oil contaminated from either the transmission 'Quill" seal or the pinion shaft seal in the final drive leaking oil into the clutch housing.
#1 get a service manual, #2. pull inspection covers and inspect for oil in the clutch housings and pull the drain plugs if present and see if anything comes out that is oily, #3. if dry adjust the offending clutch linkages to see if it pulls correctly, if it doesn't or there is oil in the housing then it is time for dissassembly, inspection and replacement of affected parts.
Service and parts manuals are your friends. Read them several times, they even have great pictures in them.

i do have a steering clutch that gets weaker when it get warmer, actually next thing on my list to get at. But the side that actually didn't spin that day is the steering clutch side that works and holds good. I guess it just speculation until i pull the covers and have a look. i appreciate your input and puts me in the ball park what to look for. when i find out what it is i'll post it.thanks!

I would suspect that the fiber discs have absorbed oil and the oil comes to the surface after they warm up, causing the slipping. Others have metnioned this problem occuring.

The other side that is slipping (didn't spin) may simply be an adjustment issue.
