John Deere 450C
John Deere 450C
I've made a deal to purchase a John Deere 450c, the only bad thing is does not have any ROPS. I'm calling around a few places, does anyone know if a 450 straight blade dozer and a loader OROPS would inter change?
If anyone has a good suggestion for places to look in around Missouri, I would appreciate any tips.
Also, lastly I've already spent a couple hours going thru the site, lots of good information here and I look forward to becoming a regular as I get to know my new found 450c.

What type of dozer do you have?
Is is the oustide mount or the inside mount 6 way dozer?
Did you machine have a ROPS on it previously, check for mounting brackets on the side of the frame sections for an outside mount dozer or on top of the rear lift cylinder mount on a 6 way blade machine.
Finding the canopy won't be that tough, but finding the mouting brackets or building them will be the challenge.

I spent some time doing more research, should I be worried that the serial tag is faked if it does not have the rops brackets? I've not found a 450C yet that does not, and all the literature shows them on.
I understand someone might take the rops off but cutting the brackets off where it joins the loader arm, I can't imagine anyone would do that.

I can see where they cut the rops brackets off with a torch.
I couldn't get it home, it keep sliding down the ramps of the trailer. I'm getting someone with a lowboy equipment trailer to move it tomorrow.
I'm definitely on the hunt for the cage and brackets. I've found a place wanting to sell me a cage off a 550..it connects down lower on the arms however.
Anyone heard if this would work? I'm afraid the loader could be wider and it would never fit right.

More questions!
Can someone take a picture of the battery box area? My loader is missing the battery disconnect switch and I'm not sure where it goes.
My 450c does not have a turbo, could this be possible because it was the first year of the c's it's a1974 according to the serial number chart.
I'm going to change the oil, anti freeze and radiator hoses to start with, top off and service the rest of the machine and try and run it for a bit and see if anything else crops up.
Lastly, the teeth for the bucket, according to the JD parts catalog it should have a two pc tooth with the tip replaceable. Either they have run it so far beyond wear to eat the base up or someone replaced the teeth with a different design. I have a nub sticking out with no hole for the role pin of any kind. My throttle cable is seized up, I got it out today and i'm working it over but I'll probably have to replace it. Is there anywhere to mail order parts like this or are these basically dealer items only?
Lastly for real, I'm still looking for a solution for my lack of canapoy that I've been discussing in the post above.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Lavoy should be able to get a throttle cable for you. When replacing the original cable watch where it sits on the adjustment at the pump and try to duplicate the setting to the same idle and the high rpm speeds close should be ok we had a 450C come in the shop lately and he thought the pump was faulty but he had replaced the cable and left lots of cable to the forward side and didn't pull back enough to get top end he needed any more .You will see what I mean when you get in there .Now there are two cables listed one is a 48 inch part# AT10579 The other is a 60 inch unit part# AT83335 so check the length but Lavoy should be able to get either .As far as a turbo goes yes you could order a turbo or natural aspired version of the 450C for the first several years I think the injectors and or injector pump were slightly different as well as a throttle mount but everything else should be the same,As far as the battery shut off switch it was also an option. You should also change the fuel filter when you are going that far as well .Now with the canopy do you have the flat plates left on the crawler or they gone as well check some wreckers and send some photos when you can to us .Digitup.
After about 2 hours and half a can of PB blaster I got my throttle cable free.
I have no brackets at all for my canopy, they took it all.
After a few hours today doing some work I'm really starting to think I got a good machine. I noticed the gaskets had been replaced at the valve cover and the head, so someone has done some work.
The engine really runs good, it steers really well and the reverse really pops no hesitation at all.
I was able to get all but 1 of the loader pins to take grease. I'm going to start getting all the supplies gathered up to service the entire machine next weekend. That and remove the 500CCA battery.....not cool.
