Jd 350b will not go into gear
Jd 350b will not go into gear
I have a 350b with a 6 way blade. I started to trouble shoot why my dozer was not moving when pushing a load, it was very inconsistent working one second then would just sit the next. All of the sudden it was working great and I was getting stuff done then it took off forward and I couldn't stop it. I had to shut it off and put into natural. I restarted and tried to put into gear, it would just grind. Like the clutch was not working. I checked the fluid in the reverser. It was empty. I refilled it and restarted, still grinding and will not go into gear.
Does the clutch need bled? Am I missing something else I should do? Any help would be great!!!
Thank God for jdcrawlers

350 clutch
All 350 crawlers have an oil clutch, you will want to get a book and go thru the testing and adjustment procedures.

350b's have a mechanical clutch only when they are not equipped with a reverser. Reverser equipped models disengage the reverser clutches when the clutch pedal is depressed. Releasing the pedal engages the reverser power train.
I have not repaired my reverser, so the other members here will need to help you out with your problem.
I hope it is a minor problem, I will be reading and learning as you go so please let us know how it turns out.

No reverser 350
You caught me on this one Scott, I should have know better. We have 2 gas 350 dozers with no reverser. One inside mount and one outside mount Dozer.
I haven't seen a b or newer model without a reverser yet.

Re: No reverser 350
The hydraulic reverser was an option until the 350C series came out. 350C HAD to have the reverser to power the new hydraulic-activated steering clutches.JWB Contracting wrote:You caught me on this one Scott, I should have know better. Bearing are gone
I am thinking Ken is correct on the diagnosis that the bearings in your reverser are gone. When the bearings go, you normally will have a lot of leakage between the reverser and engine as the reverser pump seal fails.
It's a big job to repair and requires some fairly significant disassembly to remove the reverser. Got a straight 350 on deck with the same issue, plus the frame sections and front cross member need some attention.

Not good......
I was hopping you would say "flip this, pull that and you will be good to go", That never is the case, is it......
Question? Ball park cost for repairing, if it is the case??
If there is no specual tools required I could probably do the labor...
Just checking to see if it's worth it for odd jobs around my property.

Update,
Strange thing today, I started the dozer today to attempt to pull it to the garage. I was going to tow it in neutral with the tractor. Thought for a test i would try to put it in gear. It went in with ease. I tried putting it in reverse. No problem and started back smooth, also steering felt much easer. More like hydraulic levers vs pulling hard on a hand brake. I drove it to the garage and parked it. I'm scared to do anything else. Worried I will break something worse. Not sure what to do now.
Could it just have been a fluid issue?
Should I start by draining fluid, change filter and check pressure?
Or still go the route of removing the reverser?

Swopeca;
Most of the time when things go wrong with the major components of my equipment, it turns out to be something to do with one of the things that help make that component run properly. On an engine it can be fuel or electrical, on
most equipment switches, linkages, adjustments and many things make things run as they should.
On your reverser, I cannot help you with fixing the internal problems that you might have, others here have that expertise. However I do not think that you are making fair requests for that information when you do not appear to have done a complete inspection of the reverser that is giving you trouble.
Remove the floor boards and check all the linkages, check your fluid for
water, (where are you, is it below freezing out?) inspect the filter, get a manual and follow the testing procedures. Look carefully for the cause of the leaking that must exist as your fluid was low. Is there a branch/ice/mud in the linkages? If it is working now and the fluids etc. look OK then give it a good work out. If it quits again look for the reason. Check the fluid again, check everything again. Look for loose bolts or loose connections.

I hope to have my Book this week to start to run through the proper tune up and maintenence. I'll see what comes out.....
I'll keep you posted. I plan to drain the system, replace the filiters and check the linkages. clean everything I can. Much easer then pulling the reverser at this time.
I'll Keep you updated.
Thanks again for your help!!
