450b steering brake adjustment

Post by b13150 » Wed Aug 22, 2012 4:53 pm

Had new steering clutches and brake band replaced. Ran it about 20hrs and brake was not turning as good as before. Tightened brake ban 1 turn, worked good for 30 or so minutes. Next day tightened it again 30 or so minutes later it wouldn't turn as good. It is really like the power assist is not working right. Or am I wearing out my new brake band. :?:

is your clutch adjusted properly? It is possible that the clutch has not fully released when the brake is applied and your engine is working against the brake. This is an adjustment that is done in the proper sequence so that what I am saying about the clutch being fully released happens before the brake is applied.
I have just today adjusted my 1010 that was in this situation.

Brake adjustment

When you adjusting the brake band, you need to make sure that the adjuster nut snaps into place. You should notice that with each half turn it gets more difficult to rotate and the gets easy. There is a spring loaded setup that must be in the "easy" or locked position or it will rotate from the "stiff" position, when this happens your brake will be tight momentarily and then slack off. Other than that you need to go thru the whole clutch and brake adjustment procedure.

The clutch is disengaged before the brake is applied. When I tightened the band I couldn't tell where the detent was so I may not have had that wright. As far as doing the hole setup to the manual I'm afraid I will make it worse not better. It's pretty confusing, I have had two mechanic buddies look at the manual and they were just as lost. Is there any adjustments in the brake bell actuater that will help.

I know nothing about a 450 or the clutch setup, but I remember when I first read through the adjustment procedure on my 440 I was blown away.
I walked away and came back to it a few days later when I had things together and could have a good visual of the parts and how everything worked together.
It was actually very easy when actually going through it and doing it.

Read through slowly with the crawler right in front of you and pull the linkages and stuff to see how things will work together and put a visual with the text, it should help.
