440 wheeled converted to a crawler?

Post by Topjimmy02 » Mon Oct 15, 2012 9:31 am

Hi, I have a gas crawler with a manual 6-way blade that has no serial #'s
on it. It is a good lil unit and does well.
I have just found a 1959 wheeled industrial tractor with the 2/53 diesel in it a guy is parting out. what I was wondering is ? can I take the tracks and rails from the gas crawler and convert the wheeled tractor to a crawler? I do believe the units are the same except 1 has axles and wheels and the other has finals and tracks/rails?
the mounting points and holes should be there for both setups i belive?
any input would appreciated, Thanks. Jimmy.

The one word answer is "no".

You might consider going in the other direction and moving better components over to the crawler, like the engine, possibly transmission parts, direction reverser, etc. The crawler is built on a frame, the wheel tractor is not. Gil

You could maybe bolt the crawler parts up to the wheel tractor, but it likely wouldn't hold up for the reasons Gil mentioned such as frame strength, etc.

If you really want to make the wheel tractor a crawler, they sell track conversion units for wheel tractors that wouldn't put as much stress on a wheel tractor like these:

Honestly, I think the best way to tell is compare the parts catalogs for the wheel tractor and crawler.
If it's the same part number then it should interchange IMO.

I could go into a length discussion on why it won't work, but suffice it to say, no you can not convert it.

I think some of you are missing the OP plan. He wants to take a rubber tired tractor and make a crawler.

Wasnt there a recent thread of some one doing it with a 60? Found it.

No, if I read it correctly he wants to take 440 crawler parts and try to bolt them on a wheel tractor to make a 440 crawler.
The 60 is a complete conversion or creation of a crawler that never existed, and to my mind is a different subject altohether. Again, that is assuming I am understanding the question correctly, if not, then I am nut sure.

I dont think anything will fit on the dozer except the internals for the reverser so I think it is time to pass on the tractor.
Thanks to all for the input.
