Fire from the exhaust.

Post by mulligan » Mon Dec 03, 2012 12:14 pm

I'm relatively new to the 2 cyl's and I am still struggling to understand what a good running popper sounds like.

This crawler was parked outside under old fir trees for at least 12 yrs. I got it running and driving around the yard. Everything seems to work well but the fire from the exhaust concerns me.

No valves are sticking and it fires after only half a turn of cranking. Could this be from old carbon in the head? Would a burned valve have this much fire coming out of the cyl?

At night fire is easily seen on most gasoline tractors with short exhaust.

An engine, even though it has cycled or run correctly does not put out the flame when it leaves the cylinder. Ever watch a dragster? The flames coming out of the pipes? Same thing. The faster an engine turns the greater the hot exhaust gasses.

Is it a problem? It is if you are working at a fuel refinery. Otherwise no. Just think, for alot of the kids out there, having flames come out the exhaust is a selling point (if it is any comfort).

I agree, really hard to make judgements on running correctly with open exhaust, probably more so with an orchard manifold.

I should have looked at your video. Your fire is only because you dont have the rest of the manifold on there. Also the stack will reduce the flame altogether.

What is seen is the normal flame from the cylinder.

(I was going to link the video yet this page does not support UBB embedding)

I installed a spare manifold/muffler and it quieted the crawler down considerably. I havent pushed anything with it yet but the motor feels strong. Now I'm torn as to which crawler I'll rebuild?? Maybe I need to buy a third for the parts machine. :D
