If badly pitted, worn tapered, or chips out of the gears is the primary things to look for.

all the gears we were concerned with are worn tapered. for the time being we are going to put them back in so we can get the dozer reassembled, want to fire the motor and get the timing set and some other things. and if we can find the gears we will just put them at a later time. it should run for awhile with the old gears.

Seen and had more than a few like that. Not sure if it is all attributed to bad bearings, or if sometimes it is the operator not getting the gears shifted all the way in.

by looking at them it seemed to me at first glance this would be from improper shifting. bearings are all in good shape.

I find that trans gears are a lot better in rubber tire tractors than crawlers. I picked up an M for parts for my MC and the gears and spline on the input shaft were like new .
