440 reverser

Post by DukeofDeere » Sat Dec 15, 2012 3:09 pm

What goes wrong when the trans is in reverse and the reverser is as well?

Thanks,
Duke[/i]

My understanding from reading previous threads on the subject is that it is not something you want to do a lot, especially under load, because the reverse gear is smaller than others and thus it could put a lot of stress on it when using to go forward under load. Here is one of the threads discussing it:

Otherwise the consequence is as JTRichard mentioned.
(1) JD Straight 450 crawler dozer with manual outside blade; (2) JD 2010 diesel crawler loaders; (1) JD 2010 diesel dozer with hydraulic 6-way blade; (2) Model 50 backhoe attachments, misc. other construction equipment

Nothing goes wrong as such, but there is no possible benifit to doing so. The reason not to do it is instead of the power flowing straight through the reverser, you are running it through the small "differential" in the reverser. Doing this under a heavy load like dozing will do nothing but greatly accelerate wear and increase the potential for damage to the reverser.

I just have one that came in that doesn't work with the reverser in reverse.
Supposedly the reverser has been rebuilt.
Am looking for clues.
Thanks for he replies.

when the reverser is in forward and the trans is in reverse does it do anything? if the trans is in forward and you put reverser in reverse does it move? does it move at all?

The only way to backup is reverser in forward and trans in reverse.

If the reverser works in any forward gear, it will work in reverse, it has nothing to do with reverse and reversed, but something is odd. Does reverse work with the reverser in forward? Does the reverser work with the trans in forward gears?

All gears work with the reverser in forward.
Doesn't move with reverser shifted to the rear in any gear.

If you are not feeling a definite snap in the shift lever when shifting to revese, the reverse clutch pack is out of adjustment. If you are, then I would guess the reverser has been shifted without using the foot clutch, and has torn the tabs off of the reverser clutch discs.

Ok
I'm going to open it up soon and see what is going on.

Thanks for the insights.
