1950 mc low power??

Post by monzanick » Sat Dec 29, 2012 8:07 pm

Overall my mc is running good. only Issue I got so far is when i put it in 4th it either doesn't move or "lugs" / that is it moves a few feet then stalls out. Any other gear its pretty sweet. pops right along without any issues.

Any ideas????

Make sure timing and carb settings are okay first.

If it doesn't charge and the battery is very weak, you can also lose power from poor spark.

Looking into it, just got the charging system straightened out fully last month. it still lugs/dies in 4th. the gov linkages appear to work smoothly and I have no other problems in any other gear. I gotta remember to bring my compression tester home from work to see what that is. Any ideas of what the cranking/running compression should be for these 'ol girls???

Thanks Alot! keep on crawling....

compression should be 70 psi+
More important are they close to equal.

MC should be in the 110PSI range if good shape I think.

Yes 110 psi is ideal.
Runable at less.

Perhaps worth mentioning... when you do a compression test, make sure there is no obstruction in the intake - choke is off, throttle butterfly fully open. The engine needs to breathe air as freely as possible to get a good compression measurement. Battery should be good and strong. Sometimes I put mine on the charger before the test and also give it a boost between runs. (more of an issue when there are more cylinders and/or an older battery)

Post by monzanick » Fri Jan 11, 2013 2:55 pm

#1 cylinder pops 75psi constantly. #2 however 50 psi :(

shucks. that i would believe is why i haven't any power in 4th gear.

well, now thats identified, on to the next thing.. :D

Rings or valves? Did you throw some motor oil into the cylinders and repeat the test? (temporarily seals the rings and brings the numbers up IF the problem is rings)

try some compressed air to make sure the valves are seating too.
