I just did a Google search on "John Deere 40 wiring diagram" and came up with this:

look at the regulator. it should have field, armature ground maybe? and battery

hook battery up to starter heavy post, ground to chassis, armature and fields to the generator(A an F) stamped on case.

Before you go slapping a regulator onto your tractor, you will need to get the regulator "tuned". Take your generator and regulator to a alternator repair shop and ask them to tune it. Not all generators have the same output. The shop will be able to adjust the regulator to best handle your generator. Its like a $10 service, but they have to have your generator your going to use.
