Starter for early 440ic

Post by Roger440IC » Wed Jan 09, 2013 12:38 am

Does anyone know where I can find a good rebuilt starter for my 440ic? I'm still running it at 6 volts and with the weather in the single digits both of my worn-out starters, that I swap back and forth, either get jammed or won't engage. I think it's time to upgrade.
Thanks, Roger

I had both of my starters on my 440's doing that. You pull the rod and no action. I tried a quick fix. I dissassembled the starter and blew the dust inside with some cleaning. I found out that the switch on top was pretty worn to the point of no contact. You can order those switches brand new from steiner wich Lavoy sells. You can also get the dive assembly (with the pinion). I had both of mine going after replacing the switch and some cleaning. It's important to put oil in the cups on both ends also for. Dry bushings would make it harder to turn. I hope that helps.

No sense buying another starter, you have two. If you buy another one, you are paying the rebuild cost as well as the core charge, I would just have one of the ones you have rebuilt.

I have my starters for my crawlers and skid steer loaders rebuilt at a local shop and it is about 1/2 the price of purchasing a rebuilt starter online AND I already know that it is a direct fit.

Hi: I was able to rebuild mine for a good price and with minimal skills in this area. See the attached thread. I hope this helps. Paul

I agree have them rebuilt. It will cost less and there is little to no chance of issues.

I just had my 2010 starter rebuild for around $200 and they replaced everything.

Thanks for the insight guys. Paul the photos are great. Lavoy, do you have replacement parts like the brushes, bushings and the drive assembly? If so could you let me know what the prices are so I can determine which route to take?

Not sure I have any on hand, but can get all of them. Used to be $20-$30 I think, but been while since I bought them.

Since Lavoy is out of starter parts maybe I am safe posting this, but there is a seller on eGag called "triodiode" who sells a lot of brush and bushing kits. I just looked and he has over 4500 auctions going currently. If you supplied him with the number on the starter, he can probably fix you up. Looks like most of his brush and bushing kits are under $15, maybe economy of scale? Here is the item number of one of his auctions. 250039260151
