Looking for someone to refurbish a 420C

Post by kc135cruechief » Mon Jan 21, 2013 9:17 pm

Hello All,

I recently acquired some money from a natural gas/oil lease and am looking to restore my 420 crawler. I know "restore" can mean a lot of different things but I really just want to get it in good working order. I'm not wanting a show piece however it will need to be painted. My Grandfather bought it new in 1956 and it has been in the family ever since. Sadly though, it has seen better days. The engine has been recently overhauled but the final drives and under-carriage will need work. I know these old crawlers aren't something everyone works on so I'm looking for advice on where or who to see about working on it. I am in the military stationed in Illinois and the crawler is at the farm in South East Ohio. Preferrably I'm looking for someone in the North East however I could easily bring it back to Illinois so the Mid-West would work as well. Yes, I am aware that under carriage and final drive work will cost a few thousand dollars in order to be done correctly. This crawler will stay in the family for many more years and eventually be passed on to my own kids. Any advice on someone that performs reputable repairs on old JD crawlers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...john

Lavoy should be your top choice, even if it is a long haul.
He's a busy man though so hopefully you guys can work something out.

Hi John-

Welcome to the board. As mentioned, Lavoy would be the first choice for repair if he can accomodate you.

Whether you rebuild with Lavoy or not, Lavoy works with a transporter (Willy) that runs all over the Midwest and will usually beat any other deal you can work up on hauling- you just have to be patient with your hauling schedule.

BTW, thank you for your service. My grandpa was stationed at Scott AFB so have a lot of memories growing up and visiting him there. I didn't realize that they have KC-135s there now but a lot has changed since then.

Thanks all, I appreciate the information...Lavoy will certainly be at the top of my list if he has time for something like this. I am in no hurry, it's just something I've been wanting to get done for quite some time.

Probably be looking at late fall would be my best guess. I will be starting on the bottom of one 440 tomorrow, and another to come in shortly thereafter, both for rull restorations. Also have 2 more 440's coming for repair work in the next month or so, plus finish work on the MC.
The crawler could ship up here at any time, that is not an issue, just the start date.
