440 Diesel Crawler-Loader being scrapped

Post by RanchTruck » Wed Jan 23, 2013 6:44 pm

A loader just came into one of the local junkyards that has a pretty quick turnover. It's missing the hydraulic pump on the front and the rear hydraulic tank/seat/valve assembly. Everything else appears to be there. The tracks are in poor shape, but it is a 4 roller bottom with rock guards, though they are pretty beat. The hour meter is at 3500, but who knows if it's been working or not.

5spd transmission and I think it has a reverser because there's a lever to the left side of the dash.

I can take some pictures if there's any interest in parts off it.

Would the 2-53 Detroit and bell housing from this 440 be able to replace a 1010 diesel with reverser? The engine in ours is pretty tired, it will power out in 1st when trying to climb a steep hill. I could also turn the engine over with a wrench when loosening the pump coupler bolts to replace the fan belt. Not much compression left, and it needs lots of priming to soak the rings enough to start.

According to this: http://forum.yesterdaystractors.com/ttf ... 9789b19c12
The 2-53 is interchangeable with the 1010 diesel. A detroit would probably be a lot cheaper to rebuild than the JD 1010, and it might still be in fine shape.

Is that Wyoming and New Hampshire... must be a big yard... and i think you would be in for a project there as i think nothing is interchangeable but i am far from a expert.

Okay, here is my take on the engine swap idea. To the best of my knowledge, the bolts from one to the other do not even line up. I had the divider plate from a 1010 sitting here one day, and I compared the bolt holes to the two cylinder engine block sitting nearby. I know my eyes may not be the best, but when it is seems quite obvious that the two bolts holes on each side of the 1010 block are not vertical, and on a two cylinder they are, I fail to see how it will bolt up.
Furthermore, the starter on a 1010 bolts to the divider plate and bellhousing with the nosecone facing the driver kind of on the side of the block. On a two cylinder, Detroit included, the starter sits in the top of the center section with the nose cone facing the radiator.
The ring gear on a 1010 is towards the engine side of the flywheel, on a two cylinder, it is towards the operator side of the flywheel. Unless I am totally screwed up, there is no place or way to mount the starter if you put a two cylinder into a 1010 because the back of the block is shaped differently, there would also be no ring gear for the starter to drive on as it is on the wrong side of the flywheel.
If someone wants to say that with machining, adapter plates, etc it can be done, then I would probably agree to that, but by that logic I can put a 454 in a 1010 as well.
If someone has pics of a direct bolt in of a two cylinder in a 1010, I would love to see it.

i have seen a Buick V6 in a 440 once and there is a D8 2U on you-tube that has a 454 in it .... if you have a machine shop and a ho lot of time you can Frankenstein just about anything in any thing you want

The 440 is in southern NH, and scrap usually moves through the yard in about a week. If anything is wanted off it, I can take a pic and pull it off, but the time frame is fairly short.

Sure, with a milling machine and a lathe anything can be made to fit, but I was hoping there would be enough carryover that the right combination of factory parts the 4cyl could come out and the 2cyl go in.

The 1010 is out in WY, so I'd be collecting the parts for it here and hauling them out if there was a way to make them work. It also makes it exceedingly hard for me to compare bolt patterns ect myself.

Any chance this machine has a good ELECTRIC oil pressure gauge and water temp. gauge.
I'm looking for the original gauges.

Took some pictures today. I'm not sure if it has a reverser, the lever to the left of the dash has a linkage that goes to a shaft in the side of the front of the trans housing right where the front edge of the footwell plate is. The clutch pedal goes up to what looks like the release lever on the bellhousing, so it has a normal clutch rather than a hydraulic clutchpack. Are these a gear reverser rather than a hydraulic?

Data plate says 440 ICD #460700

I've got pictures of both tracks and the dash/rear but I don't have a hosting site I can dump them all on.
