jd420 430 440

Post by dtoots1 » Thu Jan 24, 2013 11:56 am

gents,
just missed a jd440 @ auction bid was 1250.00...looked pretty good as matched engine (2cyl popper) for my old jd40 s rubber tired tractor.

just curious...are the 420 430 440 basically same engine etc? best i can see is these are nice little units weight about 5000lbs and easily hauled on car hauler...dont know what loader vs dozer wts would be...or generally what price range these go at.
still looking for winter project....even looked at skidsteers but those seem even higher and less available than the dozer/loaders...
thks, dtoots1

420-440 are same bore and stoke, yes. 430 and 440 use a different block with a side oil fill/dipstick. Late 440 uses a higher compression head, runs faster, makes 10% more power than the early 440 and 420/430.
Loader will run roughly ton and a half to two tons heavier than dozer crawler.
Price is all over the place, but don't buy just because it is cheap, there is no such thing as a cheap crawler.

are parts hard to find for these units....i know uc are worst for wearing out and are they generally interchangeable or unique to each. this one did look worn a bit but was usable life in it...running and was loadable.

Depends on the part. Steering clutches, engine parts, electrical, gauges, seat cushions, and lots of other parts are available. Undercarriage can be tough, the worst right now is pins and bushings, assuming you have rails good enough to rebush. You can convert to 350 rails, rollers, and sprocket rims if need be, so even that is not the end of the world, just can get expensive.
