440ic engine clutch question?
I have a 1959 440ic and the foot clutch does not work at all. I can see the throw out bearing pushing the fingers on the clutch plate but it is not disengaging. Thinking that the clutch disk is stuck? Can the be possible? Is there a way to adjust the clutch or something? There is not that much free play in the clutch peddle. Looks ok to me. What else do I do to trouble shoot it? Or am I just better off pulling the motor and seeing what is going on and replacing it? And how much does a clutch kit cost? Thanks. Brad

Yes when I bought it a few years ago from a friend of mine. He said that he had to run it in to something hard to brake it loose. We used the reverser to load it. And that is why mabe the reverser does not work now. It is stuck in the forward position, lever will move to reverse but the crawler just blogs down and stalls. But that is a separate issue. Lol. So I guess I am down to pulling the motor and going at it that way to see what is going on with the clutch. To look at and see what is going on with the reverser do you have to have the motor out as well? So if I pull the motor I guess I should look at the reverser as well? Sorry guys I am kinda new to crawlers. Thanks brad

Brad,
Fixing the main clutch will run around $200.00,more or less. That
is if the flywheel does'nt need to be resurfaced. The reverser is another
story. The clutch parts can be found from several sources including
Lavoy but the reverser parts are Deere sourced only.If the guy you
bought it from snapped the thing into engagement with the the input
shaft turning to unstick the clutch then he probably sheared ears off
the clutch discs in the reverser. The reverser has no neutral position,
as it snaps into fwd or reverse. If you don't have them already then
get the service and parts manual for the machine.Depending on what
you find in the reverser you may decide to gut it and replace the internals
with the nonreverser shaft.A lot of the reversers were retro fitted with
a thru shaft once the owner found out the price to repair the thing.

I just experience the same problem on my 430. Ultimately, I took the machine apart and sure enough ,clutch plate stuck to the flywheel. I dug a little into my memory bank and remembered that is why it's a good idea if leaving unused for any extended period of time to put a block of wood against the clutch pedal ,which applies just enough pressure on the preess.plate fingers to keep the clutch free from seizing due to facing filings or condensation. I won't make that mistake again.

Unless there is a catastrophic failure in the reverser, I would never remove it and go to a straight shaft.

Lavoy. Is a John Deere dealer the best place to get the parts for the reverser? Or can you get parts aftermarket or used? Also I need a pressure plate and clutch disk and I guess I should change the throw out bearing as well for the engine clutch. How much we talking. What is included in your engine clutch kit? Thanks
Engine clutch kit is plate, disc, and throwout.
I have some used reverser parts, discs are a Deere only item.

Don't forget to purchase one of lavoy clutch finger setup gauges! I'd hate to hear that you had to pull the motor again. It's a must have gauge!Lavoy wrote:Engine clutch kit is plate, disc, and throwout.

Deere has a lot of the reverser parts like clutch disks, thrust bearings
and needle bearings.I had one reverser that had eatin the differential
cross shafts. The small shafts were $80 each and the large one was
over $150.There are alot of parts in one that are Deere only and not
cheap.Like Lavoy I would not replace the reverser unless there was
a catastrophic failure but one has to wonder do you need to go backwards
as fast as forward and whats it worth to you?Luck JimAnderson
