steering clutch tool/bearing adjustment

Post by fictional31m » Fri Mar 22, 2013 10:19 pm

I was just wondering what tools you guys use to tighten the locknut on the bearing mine slipped and now i must readjust it I’m afraid to tighten it to tight and strip it as when I went thought the clutches there wasn’t much bolt thread on the throughout bearing. has anyone ever stripped the locknut in the bearing?
i used a 1/4 inch drive with a swivel and palm ratchet the last time

No locknut, the throrowout bearing holder is threaded. I use a 3/8" ratchet with a long extension that locks the socket on.

I use the 3/8 inch socket with an extension that does not lock the socket on. That way I keep a spare pile of sockets in the bottom of the housing. Gil

how much torque can you put on the bolt? I’m just afraid of breaking it or striping out the threads?

Been there done that too many times...
I have 3 telescoping magnets.
Have saved me a lot of time.

Not sure of the actual torque rating, but one hand on a 3/8" ratchet.

I can't afford a magnet but I like removing the final drive to fetch my socket out. Usually by the time I get into the clutch housing, I have forgotten why I was going there and find the socket still on the end of the extention. :o gregjo1948

Oh yeah it works well.
Even Hung a tiny flashlight and taped a magnet to it and retrieved all but aluminum.

that’s why i used a 1/4 drive there is a little hole at the back that I figured if I was to drop it in I could fish it out of the hole I thought about welding up some kind of tool.
I did see in the book what looked like a open ended wrench welded to the end of a rod to form a crows foot like tool

the one I dropped in the other side was a 3/8 swivel to big to fit though the hole at the back :( so the other side I had to use a 1/4 drive to tighten obviously I didn’t get it tight enough because it slipped and now don’t engage the pressure plate.
