Hydraulics: 1959 JD 440IC (Loader)

Post by Wall:E » Sun Mar 24, 2013 10:02 am

Hello,

Two years ago I began the process of addressing the failing hydraulic system on my crawler. I have had the cylinders rebuilt and now I am realizing the extensive customization of the entire system; primarily, the pump is not OEM and is mounted direct drive. My manual discusses a side mounted pump that runs 8 GPM, 800 psi at 1900+ rpm. Unfortunately, I have no idea, yet, what the capabilities of my pump are in these resepcts. So, am I safe to assume that a pump that exceeds the recommended parameters will pose some issues with leaks etc? Are OEm pumps available for this machine?

In addition to the pump, many of the connections are merely the hose end s;ipped over fittings and clamped with hose clamps - leaks galore - so i know those have to be replaced. Aside from the pump question my other order of business is to see if anyone might have a generalized schematic of the hydraulic system because my memory, after two years, is a little sketchy. Any assistance is much appreciated.

On a loader crawler, it will be a crank driven pump, 15GPM for non-backhoe crawler, and will run at higher pressure. You should have either a 91 or 831 loader, and manuals are around for them. You should also be able to pull up a parts diagram on JDParts online.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I don't like starting a bunch of posts for one simple question.

440ICD with a 602 blade. At what position do you put the blade to check the hydraulic fluid, or does it matter?

Doesn't have a huge effect on it, but normally check them with the blade or the loader on the ground unless the manual specifies otherwise.
